The Dullahan – Ireland’s Headless Rider ☠️🐎

They say if you hear the thunder of hooves in the dead of night, you should not look outside…

Because riding through the darkness is the Dullahan, Ireland’s terrifying headless horseman and one of the most feared figures in Irish folklore.

Carrying his own head under his arm, its eyes glowing and grin stretched wide, the Dullahan rides a black horse, calling out names into the night. And when your name is spoken… that is the moment your life ends.

No door can keep him out. No lock can stop him.
He appears wherever death is about to strike.

Worse still, he carries a whip made from a human spine, using it to clear his path as he travels between worlds. Some say he is a dark fairy, others believe he is something far older… a messenger of death itself.

The only thing said to drive him away? Gold. Even the smallest piece can force him to vanish.

So next time you hear hoofbeats after dark…

The death of Queen Medb is one of the most unexpected endings in Irish mythology… and it all came down to a piece of cheese.

After a life filled with power, war, and ambition, Medb’s story didn’t end on a battlefield. Instead, it ended in a moment that feels almost unbelievable.

It is said that Medb was bathing when she was spotted by her nephew, Furbaide. Holding a sling, he didn’t use a stone… he used a hardened piece of cheese.

One shot.
One strike.
And the powerful Queen of Connacht fell.

Some say this strange ending carries deeper meaning. A warrior queen who caused so much bloodshed brought down not by a weapon of war, but by something simple… even domestic.

Was it fate catching up with her?
Or a reminder that even the greatest figures can fall in the most unexpected ways?

Medb led armies, challenged heroes like Cú Chulainn, and shaped one of Ireland’s greatest epics… yet her final moment is quiet, strange, and unforgettable.

The Merrow in Irish Folklore 🌊🧜‍♀️

The Merrow is one of Ireland’s best-known sea beings, often compared to a mermaid, but rooted firmly in Irish coastal folklore. Said to live beneath the waves along the Atlantic shore, Merrows were known for their hauntingly beautiful singing voices and their deep attachment to the sea.

Central to their stories is the cohuleen druith, a small enchanted cap. When worn, it allowed a Merrow to move freely through the ocean. Without it, they could walk on land, but were unable to return to the sea. Many folktales describe Merrows losing their cap and becoming stranded ashore, caught between two worlds.

Some stories tell of Merrows forming relationships with humans, drawn by curiosity or affection. Yet the pull of the sea was never far away, and the longing to return beneath the waves remained constant.

Like much of Irish mythology, the Merrow reflects how the sea was understood in coastal Ireland - beautiful, generous, and never fully under human control.
