A brilliant Culture Night Special of Outspoken in RBU tonight.

Thanks to our hosts AnneMarie O Byrne Hammel and Deirdre McGarry Barker, and to our performers; Ibar Quirke, Steve Huenneke, Odhran Somers, Kenny Jones, Anne Ireton, Paul Hennessey, Gillian Wild, Ita Grattan, Margaret Hawkins and Pat Lambert.

Outspoken will return to RBU on Friday the 16th of October.

Join hosts AnneMarie O Byrne Hammel and Deirdre McGarry Barker for a night of spoken-word. This is an open-mic and we invite artists to perform one of their own, and one from a favourite.

Tomorrow is the first of September. We had a great Summer and are now putting plans in motion to completely alter the layout of the bookshop.

But there will still be lots of things happening in both bookstores, with old groups coming back and new ones forming.

Thats the final day of Eclectic Picnic in EA over. Thanks to everyone who took part in, or attended our Mindflux events.

We had Come Craft with me with Always Be Crafting this morning, the launch of Deirdre McGarry Barker's 'banjax the blues' this afternoon (more photos to follow), and part 2 of the Department of Poetry this evening, featuring Conor Lyons, Aoife Byrne, Conor Healy, and guests Steve Huenneke and Pheme Glass.

~ An immersive encounter not to be missed! ~

The Satsumabiwa is known for its deep, powerful sound, created using a large wooden plectrum called a biwa bachi.

For centuries, it was used to accompany narratives of battle, honor, and life, and was considered an essential part of samurai culture.

Thomas Charles Marshall (biwa name Thomas Ranjō 蘭杖) is an Irish musician and performer of Satsumabiwa, one of Japan’s traditional forms of narrative song accompanied by the biwa lute. He began studying Satsumabiwa in Japan in 1995 with Fumon Yoshinori (1911–2003), receiving the name Ranjō in 1999. He lived in Japan for fourteen years and has performed Satsumabiwa in Japan, Ireland and elsewhere in Europe.

Alongside his work with Japanese traditional music, Thomas is a professional organist and church musician. He serves as Director of Music at St Ann’s Church, Dublin, and St Brigid’s Cathedral, Kildare, and is Artistic Director of the Tullamore International Summer Organ Series.

Eclectic Picnic continues in Eclectic Avenue today.

Red Books Underground will be hosting the Mindflux tent as part of Eclectic Avenue this Friday to Sunday, hosting events as diverse as spoken-word, music, debating, comhra and crafting.
