A solid gold ancient Byzantine solidus of Emperor Heraclius, of unusually fine style. Struck at Constantinople
mint, circa 610 - 641 AD.
The obverse depicts the facing busts of Heraclius and his eldest son, Constantine III (Heraclius Constantine). The
legend reading:
D[ominvs] N[oster] HERACLIVS ET HERA [aclivs] CONST [antine] P[ater] P[atriae] AV [gvsti]
"Our Lords Heraclius and Heraclius Constantine, Father of the People, Augusti"
The reverse shows cross potent on three steps. The legend reads:
VICTORIA AVG
"[To the] Victory of the Emperors"

Heraclius's reign was marked by several military campaigns. The year Heraclius came to power, the empire was
threatened on multiple frontiers. Heraclius immediately took charge of the Byzantine–Sasanian War of 602–628.
The first battles of the campaign ended in defeat for the Byzantines; the Persian army fought its way to the
Impenetrable walls and a strong navy protected the Bosphorus but Constantinople, and Heraclius was able to
avoid total defeat.
