MENE. MENE, TEKEL, PARSIN

Everyone knew that Netanyahu’s attempts to prevent his trial and save his coalition would weaken our solidarity and bring about an attack from Hamas, Hezbollah, and Iran. Everyone knew that his constant attempts to derail any agreement to end the war and release the hostages would cost the hostages their lives. “The writing is on the wall” is a phrase used again and again.

The phrase comes from the Book of Daniel, Chapter 5. During a feast hosted by King Belshazzar of Babylonia, the King ordered that the gold and silver goblets taken from the Temple in Jerusalem be presented so the nobles, their wives, and concubines could drink from them.

Suddenly, fingers appeared on the wall, writing a message no one could understand. The King paled and called his wise men to read the message – but they all failed. The Queen, the King’s wife, hearing the frightened voices in the hall, entered the room. “May the king live forever!” she proclaimed. “Don’t be alarmed! Don’t look so pale!” Call Daniel, a Jerusalem exile who can interpret these things and read the message.

“You have set yourself up against the Lord of heaven,” said Daniel, “You praised the gods of silver and gold, of bronze, iron, wood, and stone, which cannot see or hear or understand. But you did not honor the God who holds your life and all your ways in his hand. Therefore, he sent the hand that wrote the inscription.”

Today, as I made my way to Be’eri to bury Carmel G*t, my niece’s sister-in-law, I thought of this overused phrase in the book of Daniel. Hamas had murdered Carmel in a tunnel in Rafah, probably with a shot in the head. Dragged by Hamas terrorists from her home in Kibbutz Beeri, she had survived captivity for eleven months. Each time she was slated for release, Netanyahu managed to thwart the agreement.

MENE, MENE, TEKEL, PARSIN read the inscription on the wall. “Your kingdom will be destroyed and given to the Medes and Persians,” explained Daniel to the King of Babylonia.

The feast is over, my friends. We must end this evil government and start rebuilding our country. We don’t need Daniel to explain the dangers we face and point out the meaning of the writing on the wall.

The Station Master of Ahmadabad

In the Summer of 1974, I set out with my friend Arnon to travel around the world. We had served for six months in the Yom Kippur War, had barely managed to put together the last year of our bachelor’s degree, and needed time to realign our lives. So, I immediately accepted when Arnon suggested that we take a few months and travel around the world, from Asia to America to Europe. Israelis were not so common in the emerging backpacker world of 1974, and we spent many a night explaining that Israel is not all sand and camels.
Making our way to Ahmadabad, Western India, we decided to buy an all-around-India student train ticket. After standing in line for quite a while, we reached the ticket office. With a serious look, the booking clerk looked at our passports and motioned us to follow him – to the station master’s office. After sinking in the plush sofas for about half an hour, we were called into his presence.
“So, you are economics students from Israel,” he said. “I have wanted to meet people like you for a long time. I have a question that has bothered me for quite a while.” We leaned forward, a little apprehensive.
“How does the kibbutz own a factory and represent the worker at the same time?” We stuttered an answer, but honestly, we didn’t have a clue.
In India of 1974 Israel was a shining miracle. A third-world country that had managed to create a democratic welfare society, with the availability of health services and education for all, but also with a developing free economy and a booming agriculture.
However, in the last fifty years, we have distanced ourselves a long way from those ideals that founded this state. Neo-liberal think tanks, right-wing and sectoral politics, divisive tactics to keep in power – and most of all, the ostracization of farmers, kibbutz, and labor.
The events of these last months have put a mirror in our faces – and what we saw in it was shattered and broken. In the upcoming issue of ERETZ, I have followed in the footsteps of Israel’s Civil society, bent on mending the fractures of our society, making a tikkun.
For the last article in the issue, on the New Kibbutz, I went to visit a longtime family friend, 98-year-old Rachel Rabin, Yitzhak’s sister. She has lived on Kibbutz Manara for the last eighty years, a leader of the kibbutz, and an educator. On October 9th, the settlements along the Lebanese border were evacuated, and Rabin and other elderly members of the kibbutz moved, temporarily, to the assisted living home in Kibbutz Kinneret. “I have seen a lot over my years,” Rabin told me, “But, we will return, rebuild our kibbutz, no doubt about that.”
One day, I will return to visit the station master at Ahmadabad, most probably his successor. We are still the society we set out to be, I will tell him. It will take time to put it back together, but you will be proud of us again”.
