For Gandhi Jayanti, we look back through photographs documenting the Civil Disobedience Movement in Bombay between 1930 and 1931. These images, drawn from a rare historical album held in the Alkazi Collection of Photography (Alkazi Foundation), capture processions, public gatherings and moments from the movement in the city.

The photographs are part of Photographing Civil Disobedience: Bombay 1930–1931, which brings together 245 images from the K.L. Nursey’s Old Congress Party Album alongside essays examining this visual archive and its historical context.

In 1970, Tyeb Mehta made his only film, Koodal, shot with support from the Films Division of India ([email protected]). No fixed beginning or end, just a montage of temples, abattoirs and city streets, cut to Carnatic music.”It is my autobiography,” he said of it later.

He never made another, but the editing logic, cropping, foreshortening, shadow, shows up in his paintings for decades after.

Read more in our first comprehensive book on Tyeb Mehta published in association with the Kiran Nadar Musem of Art (Kiran Nadar Museum of Art). The book is avalable to buy via our website and other leading stores

Le Corbusier called Chandigarh the crown of his career. India called it a beginning.

When Partition put Lahore on the other side of a new border, Punjab needed a capital and Nehru wanted one that owed nothing to the colonial past. What followed was thirteen years of work, twenty-three trips to the site, and one of the most complete modernist cities ever built.

Shaun Fynn’s ‘Chandigarh Revealed’ is a frank and honest portrayal of this city. It is a wonder to behold, pointing out that while Chandigarh is not perfect, it is as close to the ideal as could be given its volatile mixture of religion, politics, and geography…” Sean Ruthen.

243 photographs and 5 maps, with a foreword by Maristella Casciato (Maristella Casciato) an essay by Vikramaditya Prakash (Vikramāditya Prakāsh) and an interview with MN Sharma (one of the last architects to have worked alongside Le Corbusier in Chandigarh).
