മരണത്തിന് തൊട്ടുമുമ്പ് ലഭിച്ച സിസിടിവി ദൃശ്യങ്ങൾ മനസ്സിനെ തകർക്കുന്നതാണ്. അച്ഛന്റെ തോളിലിരുന്ന ഇളയ കുഞ്ഞ്... അച്ഛന്റെ കൈപിടിച്ച് നടന്ന മൂത്ത മകൾ... കാഴ്ചപരിമിതിയുള്ള അമ്മ മകളുടെ തോളിൽ പിടിച്ച് നടക്കുന്നു... ഒരു സാധാരണ കുടുംബം പോലെ അവർ ഭക്ഷണം കഴിച്ച് മടങ്ങുകയായിരുന്നു. ആ ദൃശ്യങ്ങൾ കാണുമ്പോൾ അവർ ഏതാനും നിമിഷങ്ങൾക്കകം മരണത്തിലേക്ക് നടക്കുകയാണെന്ന് ആരും കരുതുമായിരുന്നില്ല.

കൂലിപ്പണിക്കാരനായ നാരായണന് സ്ഥിരവരുമാനമുണ്ടായിരുന്നില്ല. വിവിധ ആരാധനാലയങ്ങളിലും നാട്ടുകാരുടെ സഹായത്തോടെയുമാണ് ആ കുടുംബം ഏറെക്കാലം കഴിഞ്ഞിരുന്നത്. വാടക നൽകാൻ കഴിയാതെ വീടൊഴിയേണ്ടിവന്നപ്പോൾ അവർ സഹായം തേടി. കോതമംഗലം പോലീസുകാർ സ്വന്തം പോക്കറ്റിൽ നിന്ന് പണമെടുത്ത് വസ്ത്രങ്ങൾ വാങ്ങി നൽകി. താൽക്കാലിക താമസസൗകര്യം ഒരുക്കി. പിന്നീട് നെല്ലിക്കുഴി ഭാഗത്ത് ഒരു വാടകവീടും കണ്ടെത്തി നൽകി. എന്നാൽ ആ വീട്ടിലേക്ക് മാറാനിരുന്ന ദിവസമാണ് എല്ലാ പ്രതീക്ഷകളും അവസാനിപ്പിച്ച് ആ കുടുംബം മരണത്തിലേക്ക് നടന്നത്. ഈ വസ്തുതയാണ് ഈ ദുരന്തത്തെ കൂടുതൽ ഹൃദയഭേദകമാക്കുന്നത്.

ഒരു കുഞ്ഞിന്റെ ഓരോ കരച്ചിലിലും ഒരു കോടി ഈശ്വരവിലാപങ്ങൾ കേൾക്കാം. വിശക്കുന്ന ഒരു മനുഷ്യന്റെ നിലവിളിയെക്കാൾ വലിയ പ്രാർത്ഥന മറ്റൊന്നില്ല. പട്ടിണി ഒരു വ്യക്തിയുടെ കുറ്റമല്ല. ദാരിദ്ര്യം ഒരു കുടുംബത്തിന്റെ നാണക്കേടുമല്ല. എന്നാൽ പട്ടിണിയും നിസ്സഹായതയും കാരണം ഒരു കുടുംബം മരണത്തെ തിരഞ്ഞെടുക്കേണ്ടിവരുന്നത് ഒരു സമൂഹം മുഴുവൻ ആത്മപരിശോധന നടത്തേണ്ട വിഷയമാണ്.
