Fun Facts About Baby Food

1. Baby food was only developed by Henre Nestle in 19th century
It was the ideal choice for moms who were tired of making their own baby food at home. Even the government supported the mass marketing of baby food, saying that the machines were more adept at serving finely-sieved food than the moms possibly can. But the popularity of baby food reduced a bit in the 1970s due to nutritional concern, safety issues, and inflation, which prompted moms to go back to homemade baby food.

2. Among the first baby food products was liver soup
Yep, Ge**er made baby soup, claiming that it has a bland taste that kids like. Despite saying that the canned soup is rich in vitamins A, B, C and iron, it was discontinued in the 1950s. What’s left are vintage ads and jars of this baby food that are sold online.

3. Almond milk is the most popular base used in baby foods.
Almond has a protein that is almost similar to those found in the human breast milk.

4. Baby food used to be blown down a baby’s throat.
Quite scary, isn’t it? But this technique was used in the 16th century with the help of a “pap boat.” Just put the spoon-like end of the boat into the mouth of your baby, then pour the pap in. It was not known just how comfortable this would have been for babies, but parents and guardians loved it for its efficiency.

5. People used to think that fruits and vegetables are bad for babies.
Before the 1900s, there was a common notion that feeding babies fruits and vegetables would give them diarrhea and fever. It was only later when scientists proved that vitamins and minerals from fruits and vegetables are good for babies.

6. Some baby foods contain flame retardants.
Although they are tested to be below the levels considered to be dangerous to someone’s health, you might wonder just why baby food needs flame retardants. Will it suddenly catch fire when cooked?

7. Doctors used to recommend to feed babies days after they’re born
This was suggested by doctors in the 1960s, with the strongest advocate being Miami doctor Walter Sackett, Jr., who also wrote Bringing Up Babies. He recommended feeding babies two to three days after their birth, with feeding time at 12 noon and 12 midnight.
