In today's feature, meet Monalisa Deb, a passionate artist, environmentalist, trekker and so much more.
Mona quit her corporate job a few years ago to give time to her passion for hand crafted fashion. She loves to embroider & hand paint.
Mona has started her line of hand crafted, Eco- printed apparel that she sells under her brand name of “Monapparel”.
After lots of research, many trials and unending persistence, she evolved her own method of sustainable process.
A brief note by Mona on her journey into ECO-PRINTING.
Being a nature lover and environment conscious person, I always wanted to incorporate natural elements in my work. While studying fashion designing, I came across certain negative impacts of the fashion industry on the environment; after learning about synthetic dyes and toxic synthetic textile wastes, a thorough study was inevitable for the sustainability of my work.
It's a series of meticulous processes; starting with treating the fabric and dyeing with the natural dyes (extracts from roots, barks, seeds of the trees) and simultaneously collecting and preparing the leaves, keeping in mind that not all the leaves print well. This is finally followed by an intricate process of getting the leaves' prints on the fabric.
It may sound easy but there are too many variables to deal with, to get desired prints.I love abstract prints which look fashionable on garments. The entire process takes minimum 3 - 4 days and my garments are mostly done with zero waste patterns to avoid textile wastes.
At the end of the day, it's extremely satisfying as the outcomes are unpredictable yet fascinating.
