While conducting a waste collection drive recently at a school, I observed a couple of laborers had to work under the scorching sun.
Their task?
To fill bags with waste, lift, weigh them, and load onto truck.
There were more than 100 ruck bags—each weighing close to 40 kgs.
And all this they did in just ~4 hours.
Can we imagine the physical toll this takes?
The body aches, muscle fatigue they experience after a day like that are unimaginable for most of us.
This is their daily work
And when asked them they told their only "solution" to deal with this exhaustion:
Consuming alcohol.
For these laborers, alcohol meant to dull the pain and get some sleep after a day of relentless labor.
But what’s the long-term cost?
Their bodies bear the consequences of both the physical work and the daily consumption of alcohol. This cycle is invisible to us, but it’s the harsh reality for so many who work in labor-intensive jobs.
Should we accept this as normal?
This made me think— are there healthier alternatives to cope with the physical strain of their work?
This is a reality that needs to change.
