Anatomy of a Fall

One of my favourite movies and now a strong Oscar contender, AOAF is a smart thriller, a courtroom rollercoaster and a family drama all woven into one single movie.

The movie deals with the aftermath of a su***de where new details are brought to light ana analysed to check ulterior motives and alternate theories of the death.

Sapne Vs Everyone

An indie web series created by the geniuses at available on YouTube free for all. Currently has a rating of 9.5/10 on IMDB.

I saw this around the same time I saw Rohit Shetty's hyped Indian Police Force. And while that was laughable to say the least, this series just strengthened my belief that a good product will be appreciated by the audiences despite any bottlenecks. The Leads and blast their talent out in this tale of aspirations and dreams. is brilliant in a cameo and I was super impressed by as the antagonist.

Verdict : WATCH THIS, ASAP !!

Review : FIGHTER

Siddharth Anand is redefining the action genre for Bollywood. Fighter is an aerial action combat movie that is so well shot and executed, you can compare it with the Top Gun franchisee. And to have Hrithik Roshan at the helm of affairs is a sure shot way for box office glory. Because India's most good looking male actor is one who can act as well. And by God, Hrithik delivers his earnest best for the role. The supporting cast is good, the dialogues a little gimmicky at times but effective nonetheless. Deepika Padukone plays able foil to the alpha male and has her character arc cut out well but ends up just giving expressions after key scenes. Anil Kapoor exudes discipline and a no nonsense persona pretty well. The music is hummable and at times inspiring. The story is predictable army fare but would still keep you interested.

Verdict: Watch it on the big screen !!

Review : DUNKI

Raj Kumar Hirani is a master storyteller. The script is the king in his films often taking the audiences on a joy ride of emotional rollercoaster proportions. The characters become secondary to begin with but later endearing and much later household names. Sample Chatur or Kamli for example. So Dunki was going to be a challenge with SRK's newfound larger than life action hero persona. Ultimately story telling wins. But at a cost.

Shahrukh immerses himself into the role of Hardy Singh, an ex army man hellbent on seeing his new found friends achieve their dreams of moving abroad to London. These friends each have a sob story which takes up much of the first half, even though the narration is seeping with classic Hirani brand of humour. The second half compensates for the first wherein the story moves faster taking a serious angle. It's predictable yet watchable fare at best. And then a fitting reunion based climax which may drag a little but eventually does justice to the movie bringing in a sense of closure.

Length is an issue because not all characters turn out to be endearing as I had mentioned earlier. Vicky Kaushal in a special appearance is fire and Taapsee too does really well oscillating between comedy and tragedy. But the side characters of Buggu and Balli aren't too memorable besides being comic relief in a scene or two. And it takes time to drive home the point of migrating, love, friendship or patriotism. And the effort shows. And that's not good news. It stops the movie from achieving a lot more than it did. It makes the movie a good one time watch !

Dunki is sure to succeed with the hype and stardom. However it failed to achieve greatness. Watch it though for the hattrick man, that guy who gives it his all in a great performance - Shahrukh Khan.

Review : Animal

I saw Animal FDFS but waited for the dust to settle before giving my opinion. The critics and the maker are at war. The audiences have polarised opinions on the movie. But at the heart of it, keeping all the toxicity at bay, this is an enjoyable masala fare. If you're going to watch a Sandeep Reddy Vanga film, you better fathom the violence and male chauvinism he will bring with his product. It's his brand now. A segment of audiences are aroused by it for right or wrong reasons and in the end if you have the good sense to look through the banality, you will find a good movie with some great acting by Ranbir Kapoor, superbly choreographed action sequences (the hotel lobby scene reminds you of Oldboy), THE most stylish entry in Indian movies in recent times for an antagonist - Lord Bobby (the Jamaal Jamaaloo music sticks to you) and some great BGM and songs to groove to.

Because in the end, all the Alpha wants is to be a Beta, a good beta !!

Verdict: Very very watchable if you can stomach violence and take the Vangaism with a pinch of salt.

Recco: SCAM 2003

OTT:

One of the best shows streaming now is the Telgi Story or SCAM 2003, as we know it. The series was released in 2parts this year and one can see all the episodes now, since the 2nd part got released a few days back.

has gotten into the skin of Telgi's character so much that I am unable to visualise him in any other role whatsoever. The level of craft is uncanny. This actor is a dark horse and is meant to go places. While other performances are decent shifts put in, Riar shines in the author backed role of Telgi in Hansal Mehta's scam universe, just like Prateek Gandhi did in the '92 story.

Recco: KALKOOT

OTT:

Vijay Verma stars in this offbeat yet highly recommended cop drama KALKOOT, on Jio Cinema. Brimming with satire, some great screenplay and deftly executed performances by Vijay Verma, Seema Biswaas, Yashpal Sharma, Shweta Tripathi and Gopal Dutt (in a different avataar)

The subject could sound stale but the treatment is unique. Verma brings out the struggle of a conscientious human being struggling to come to terms with an imperfect society at large.

If you can bear through the constant ads on Jio Cinema platform, Kaalkoot is one of the best shows to watch this year.

Review : JAWAN

Atlee and SRK have cracked the mass commercial entertainer formula like no other. This is the perfect north and south amalgamation with Shahrukh's star power and Atlee's storytelling and mass appeal. Jawan should be one of the highest grossing movies of all times as per media reports but more importantly it is a solid entertainer. Breathtaking action, brilliant screenplay, a worthy antagonist and a competent support cast make this movie a winner. And the cherry on top is maxed out utilisation of the star power of SRK. He has terrific entry scenes, whistle worthy dialogues that have been written to incite public hysteria, plethora of high octane action with the occasional south touch that further adds to the game. Anirudh's BGM spunks up the action sequences but besides a couple of decent ones, there isn't much to remember about the soundtrack.

There is though a bit of a money heist hangover. SRK particularly in romantic scenes looked old reminding you why he chose the action genre in this part of his career. And Sethupati, although competent every inch as the antagonist, is a badly written character.

Verdict: Definitely watch what is going to be the biggest hit of the year and one of SRK's biggest movies.

Review : Oppenheimer

Nolan in his filmography if you notice, isn't one to build a character study. He rather chooses to focus on the plot, the scenes, the spectacle, often creating one marvel after another. It's a pity, given the sneak peeks we have been given into the psyches of such fantastic characters such as Batman, the Joker, Di Caprio in inception (perhaps his most personal until now). A film would be too short to explore the depths one would feel.

And so Oppenheimer gives him the opportunity to do just that, focus on the central character in a feature film worth 3 hours long and the chain of events he transpires and the aftermath around it. The result is near poetic. Cillian Murphy in the titular role, conveying vulnerability from the blue eyes. In one scene, his speech conveys one thing while his eyes speak a different tone. That alone is Oscar worthy. And a plethora of talented cast that do justice in showcasing the witch hunt and double standards of the American govt. trying to being down perhaps one of the most important men of science.

It would be unjust to count Robert Downey Jr. , Matt Damon and Emily Blunt amongst the crowd, who absolutely hold their own in their roles. Superbly cast and immaculate performances.

The explosion scenes (bereft of CGI as per Nolan) would stay as images in your head for long, much as the sound would last in your ringing ears, much after you've left the theatres. And yet they will only be second to that image of Oppenheimer's eyes, hollow, blank, as if asking you to peek into them and glance into his soul to judge him as creator or executioner.
