“Carpetwala” “Carpetwala”. The streets of Amritsar resounded with the call of young Ali Mohammed who had just migrated from Kashmir to make a living selling carpets door to door. He then heard of Bangalore a large British cantonment in the south, and decided to make a trip there with his wares. The success of his first trip soon saw him make regular visits as the army officers and the elite of Ban
galore picked up a taste for hand woven Kashmiri carpets. By early 1920, his younger son Mohamed Jan had joined him and they continued their “Pheris” or rounds of Bangalore’s streets. After Partition, the Jan family decided to make Bangalore their home. In 1950 Mohamed Jan along with his eldest son Aslam Jan took the decision to set up a shop under the name of “Kashmir Ware House” on Bangalore’s most famous shopping road – Commercial Street. Later , in 1958 Aslam Jan along with his younger brothers Azam Jan and Asgar Jan set up another Shop on commercial Street under the name of ” Bangalore Carpet Palace”, an exclusive rug store. Today, the fifth generation of carpet traders continue the tradition at “Carpet Kingdom”. A testimony to the fact, that over the past 100 + years, carpets have become a part of the family DNA.
