Today, we celebrate the hands behind the loom.

The hands that patiently prepare every thread, the minds that understand the rhythm of the loom, and the generations of knowledge woven into every piece of fabric.

Handloom is more than a textile. It is time, skill, tradition, creativity, and countless stories woven together.

This National Handloom Day, we celebrate the makers, the weavers, the learners, and everyone who continues to keep this beautiful craft alive.

Here’s to slowing down, valuing the handmade, and remembering the hands behind what we wear.

Two silk scarves.
One weighs 134 g.
The other weighs 183 g.
We asked people at our studio to close their eyes while we draped one scarf over each arm.
Then we asked a simple question.
“Which one feels lighter?”
More than 30 students, designers and visitors have taken the test so far.
Every single one chose the 183 g scarf as the lighter one.

INTRODUCTORY COURSE

Pattern weaving on multi-shaft looms

Immersive 2-Week Course. Designed for fashion designers, interior designers, entrepreneurs, and craft enthusiasts, this comprehensive course introduces you to the art of multi-shaft weaving.

The course will guide you through:

- Warp preparation
- Dressing the loom
- Reading weaving drafts
- Exploration of weave structures like plain weave & its derivatives, twill weaves and 4-end satin.
- Analysis of weave structures and their applications
- Colour interactions
- Introduction to International weaving design software
- Yarn requirement calculations basics

Hands-On Learning:

Working individually on Ashford 4-shaft table looms, you’ll warp the yarns and dress the looms three times, So, you will gain confidence of preparing the loom for multi-shaft weaving in future and explore different weave structures on your own. Exposure to reading weaving drafts, simulating weave designs using software, understanding colour interactions and knowledge of fabric drape and construction will give a better understanding of materials and empower you to design better.

Project Work:

- Choose yarn count and colours of your choice
- Calculate yarn requirements
- Prepare weaving pattern design
- Prepare warp
- Dress the loom
- Weave and complete the project (table runner/ place mats/ cushion cover)

Introduction to Weaving – Rigid Heddle Loom

A hands-on workshop at the Shuttles & Needles studio, Chennai.

Participants work individually at a loom and learn to prepare the warp, set up the loom, and begin weaving with guidance. The session focuses on how fabric is built through simple, repeatable actions, with time to settle into the rhythm of the process. Towards the end, a short demonstration opens up possibilities beyond the first steps, giving a sense of how one can continue to explore and grow with the loom.

Each participant weaves a set of coasters during the workshop.

This workshop is often the first step for those who want to experience weaving first-hand and understand what working with a loom involves before deciding to pursue it further.

Introduction to SAORI Weaving: A Journey of self-discovery through weaving
SAORI is a Japanese contemporary weaving style rooted in Zen philosophy, emphasising free-flowing, uninhibited hand weaving. It celebrates individuality and encourages participants to connect with their authentic self through making, without boundaries.
Unlike traditional weaving, SAORI follows a non-technical, non-judgemental approach. There is no planning, no adherence to patterns and no notion of mistakes. Participants engage with weaving as a process of exploration rather than ex*****on.
Each participant works individually on a user-friendly SAORI loom that is pre-warped and ready to weave. Through hands-on weaving, participants explore possibilities and experience intuitive decision-making. Guidance is offered through observation and conversation rather than instruction.
The course introduces the core philosophy and history of SAORI weaving while allowing space for personal discovery. During the course, participants create a unique woven yardage that may later be used as a scarf, wall hanging or framed textile piece.
No prior experience in weaving or art is required.
Course information:
• Duration: 3 days
• Location: Shuttles & Needles studio, Chennai
• Materials: All materials are provided
• Batch size: Limited, to allow focused engagement
• Course facilitator: SAORI-certified instructor
• Course fees: ₹14,200 inclusive of materials and taxes
Following the course, participants may continue their exploration of SAORI weaving independently. Guidance on equipment options and next steps is available for those who wish to develop their practice further. Loom-time at the studio may also be booked for continued experimentation and personal projects.

A small experiment we often conduct at the studio.

Two cones of yarn.

One cashmere.
One linen.

The challenge is simple: Snap them.

The cashmere snaps almost immediately. The linen stubbornly refuses.

The winner appears obvious.

Then comes the second question:

Which one would make the better warp yarn?

The answers are usually unanimous. The loom however seems to have other ideas!
