The birthday of Mary mother of Jesus https://darwin.catholic.org.au/daily_reflection/the-birthday-of-mary-mother-of-jesus-4/ I remember the joy that we used to have as children organising a ‘surprise party’ for mum’s birthday!

We used our pocket money (with a major top-up from Dad) to buy goodies…

Then we would ‘surprise her’ with a get-together full of happy birthdays and fun.

It was so simple and full of love.

Today, we celebrate the birthday of the Mother of the Church.

Mary of course as well as being the mother of Jesus, is the mother of his mystical body, The Church.

Without the incarnation, there would be no church. Mary was the first Christian disciple to say yes to Jesus.

She is also a role model for us of fidelity to God’s will for us all.

My mother died many years ago. I believe that I am still connected with her with a deep bond of love since love is eternal.

However, I know that Mary is also my mother, she is our mother.

On her birthday today, we give thanks for her and celebrate her.

I am sure that she delights in our love for her just like my mother delighted in our ‘parties all those years ago.

Forgiveness https://darwin.catholic.org.au/daily_reflection/forgiveness-6/ In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells us not to give up trying to reconcile with each other.
Reconciliation is not always easy. There are times when we need the help of others in our journey of healing relationships.
Forgiveness is such a distinguishing mark of a Christian.
Jesus forgave ‘publicans and sinners’.
He also sent the apostles to proclaim the Good News to all, and not just to the Jewish people.
We need the grace of God to love in this way.
It is important not to underestimate what the grace of God can do within us.

Mother Teresa https://darwin.catholic.org.au/daily_reflection/st-teresa-of-calcutta/ Today is the feast of Mother Teresa of Calcutta (1910-1997).
A year before she died, I visited my uncle Joe S.J. in India. He has been a missionary working mostly with the Santal Tribal People since 1957.
When I arrived on that particular occasion, he told me that the following morning we were visiting the mother house of Mother Teresa’s sisters.
The following morning, it was still dark; we left Xavier College, where we were staying, for 6 a.m. Mass.
When we arrived, I noticed a number of concelebrating priests. They told me that they had voted for me to be main celebrant and that I was to preach!
I was rather startled; I was to preach to Mother Teresa?? I felt that this Holy woman would see right through me! I should have been listening to her preach!
So I preached and actually gave her Holy Communion.
After Mass I was invited to have breakfast with her. Just the three of us and her!
She was most gracious. She would have been a very sick woman then (she died not long afterwards). She was also going through spiritual darkness at the time. She was not experiencing and spiritual ‘Highs’ and was feeling flat spiritually.
It is a common experience of many Holy people to go through this purification of LOVE.
It is a growing into loving for LOVE’S sake and not to look for getting anything back.
I knew nothing of what she was experiencing at the time. I discovered all that after she had died.
What I saw was this little old woman full of energy and love. She talked about a number of new projects that her sisters were going to undertake. I was deeply impressed!
Mother Teresa reached out to the poorest of the poor.

Commitment https://darwin.catholic.org.au/daily_reflection/commitment-2/ Commitment sets you free.
At my parents’ funeral, I said that commitment set them free.
I said this because they were committed to each other, to their children, their extended family and friends, and to their Catholic faith.
They had their challenges and, like all of us, were not perfect.
However, I know how much my siblings and I, and indeed our extended family and many who knew them, looked up to them.
They experienced the death of their parents, their siblings and two of their children. Mum’s illness brought out the best in my father in his care for her, and she was there for him in his challenges.
They were happy people and very down to earth.
Commitment is not about being perfect. It is about not giving up on living up to our beliefs and ideals. It is about fresh starts.
It is about saying yes to God again and yet again. It is also about trusting in the faithfulness of God.

St Gregory the Great https://darwin.catholic.org.au/daily_reflection/st-gregory-the-great-2/ Today is the feast of Saint Gregory the Great (540-605).

He lived at a time of great change.

The Roman Empire had crumbled in Western Europe. The ‘barbarians’ were taking up more territory.

Gregory was a great administrator and organiser. He also had excellent people skills.

He used these skills well when he was the civil prefect of Rome.

He became a monk and was ordained a deacon.

Eventually, he was elected pope, the first monk to hold this office.

He used his organisational and other skills to protect the church during these turbulent political times. He related well to the new political leaders for the benefit of the church.

He was also a missionary and sent Saint Augustine (of Canterbury) to England as a leader of a missionary group of monks. They helped in the conversion of the Anglo-Saxons to Christianity.

He was a man of his time who used his skills and gifts for the church’s mission.

He called himself ‘the servant of the servants of Christ’.

We all have our skills and are invited to use them to spread the gospel and the good news of Christ.

True Freedom https://darwin.catholic.org.au/daily_reflection/true-freedom-2/ I am truly acting out of freedom when I am guided by true values and act out of those values.
Living by Christian values will, at times, mean that we die to ourselves in following Jesus.
Peter asked Jesus how many times he needed to forgive. Jesus did not put the limit that Peter had presumed.
A truly free person does not put a limit on forgiveness. Forgiveness does not mean that we do not have a healthy self-love and a healthy self-defence against the abuse of others. It does mean that we are open to healing while accepting present limitations.
True freedom is a journey. We grow into it by the grace of God. We are not perfect and, indeed, are limited. We grow in forgiveness, in balancing our appetites, in our knowledge and understanding, and in our ability to love.
It is the grace of God that enables us to grow in freedom.
Jesus invites us to ‘put our hands on the plough’ and to keep moving forward.
God, give me the grace to stay committed to being truly free and not to let my weaknesses and limitations stop me from growing into the person you have created me to be.

Boundaries https://darwin.catholic.org.au/daily_reflection/boundaries/ A child growing up without boundaries can become a ‘savage’!
We share many instincts with animals.
We respond to climate, appetites, urges, pain, etc.
However, unlike animals, we are guided by reason and conscience.
We are spiritual as well as physical beings.
Children learn from adults, as indeed do many juveniles in the animal world.
The experience and moral principles of parents and other significant adults in a child’s life are essential in helping them to grow into well-balanced human beings.
Loving discipline and ‘tough love’ are part of the guidance that adults give to children.
Sharing values and the rationale for these values is part of a child’s education and development.
While appreciating and relishing being loved in return, an adult gives priority to loving a child and others in their care.
Loving means that we do not always please, and that we are not trapped in looking for approval from those for whom we are responsible.
We all need boundaries that guide us to behave ethically and with integrity.
These values are aspects of love.

Does Jesus Still Love Me When I’m Angry? Elisha from Tiwi Islands Asks Bishop Charles https://darwin.catholic.org.au/does-jesus-still-love-me-when-im-angry-elisha-from-tiwi-islands-asks-bishop-charles/ Sometimes the simplest and most honest questions can help us understand something profound about God’s love.
Elisha from Tiwi Islands recently had a question for CathCroc: “When I am angry, does Jesus love me?”
CathCroc appreciated Elisha’s honesty and took the question to Bishop Charles Gauci for his thoughts.
Bishop Charles’ answer was reassuring and clear: God will always love you.
He explained that feeling angry is part of being human. Sometimes there can be good reasons to feel angry, particularly when we see something that is wrong or unfair. At other times, we may become angry for the wrong reasons or allow our anger to influence the choices we make.
Bishop Charles reminded Elisha that while it is important not to remain angry all the time, our emotions and even our mistakes do not cause God to stop loving us.
“God will always love you, even if you make bad choices,” Bishop Charles said.
God does not want us to make bad choices, but His love for us does not disappear when we get something wrong. Instead, His love remains with us and invites us to make better choices, to forgive, and to begin again.
Bishop Charles emphasised this message in a way that is difficult to forget: God will “never, ever, ever, ever, ever” stop loving you.
Elisha’s question is a beautiful reminder for all of us. We may experience anger, make mistakes, or have moments when we are not at our best, but God’s love remains constant.

Moderation https://darwin.catholic.org.au/daily_reflection/moderation/ Prudence is about wisdom. Wisdom is about acting for the greater good.
Wisdom requires knowledge and reflection.
A wise person knows that they are forever learning. We are the heirs of the wisdom of the ages.
While we need to be truly present to the moment, we also do not have to act as though we are starting everything from scratch. We benefit from the experience and knowledge of those who have gone before us.
Cultures change and times change. Yet there are perennial values that endure.
A prudent person reflects before they act. They assess situations and interactions. They do not simply react to emotions and impulses.
A prudent person deliberates and is aware of the consequences of their decisions and actions.
They are guided by an educated conscience. A Christian is guided by the values of Jesus and his Church.
A wise and prudent person needs humility and an open heart.
