🎬 Why was ACMI created? The story behind Melbourne’s home of screen culture.
ACMI’s story began with a simple idea: to celebrate, preserve, and share the stories created through moving images.
Its roots go back to the State Film Centre of Victoria, established in 1946, which collected and preserved films for education and cultural purposes. Over the years, the collection and vision grew beyond traditional film.
In 2002, ACMI officially opened at Federation Square, bringing together film, television, video games, digital media, and interactive storytelling under one roof.
The purpose was more than simply displaying old films. ACMI was created to help people understand how screen culture shapes our lives, while giving audiences and creators a place to experience, learn, and imagine what comes next.
Today, when you walk through ACMI, you’re walking through decades of storytelling — from the earliest moving images to the digital worlds we experience today.
