The Great Flap of 1942: How the Raj Panicked over a Japanese Non-invasion by Mukund padmanabhan

The Great Flap of 1942 is a narrative history of a neglected and scarcely known period―between December 1941 and mid-1942―when all of India was caught in a state of panic. This was largely a result of the British administration's mistaken belief that Japan was on the verge of launching a full-fledged invasion. It was a time when the Raj became unduly alarmed, when the tongue of rumour wagged wildly about Japanese prowess and British weakness and when there was a huge and largely unmapped exodus (of Indians and Europeans) from both sides of the coastline to 'safer' inland regions. This book demonstrates, quite astonishingly, that the Raj cynically encouraged the exodus and contributed to the repeated cycles of rumour, panic and flight.

Mastering the Data Paradox: Key to Winning in the AI Age by Nitin seth

There are two remarkable phenomena that are unfolding almost simultaneously. The convergence of these two, with data as the common denominator, holds immense promise and the opportunities are boundless.

This book provides us with opportunities to push our thinking, to innovate, to transform and to create a better future at all levels― individual, enterprise and the world.

✨The Details by Ia genberg translated by kira josefsson Shortlisted for the 2024 International Booker Prize

A famous broadcaster writes a forgotten love letter; a friend abruptly disappears; a lover leaves something unexpected behind; a traumatised woman is consumed by her own anxiety.

In the throes of a high fever, a woman lies bedridden. Suddenly, she is struck with an urge to revisit a particular novel from her past. Inside the book is an inscription: a message from an ex-girlfriend.

Pages from her past begin to flip, full of things she cannot forget and people who cannot be forgotten. Johanna, that same ex-girlfriend, now a famous TV host. Niki, the friend who disappeared all those years ago. Alejandro, who appears like a storm in precisely the right moment. And Birgitte, whose elusive qualities shield a painful secret.

Who is the real subject of a portrait, the person being painted or the one holding the brush? The Details is a novel built around four such portraits, unveiling the fragments of memory and experience that make up a life. In exhilarating, provocative prose, Ia Genberg reveals an intimate and powerful celebration of what it means to be human.

Broken Promises tells the story of Bihar’s plunge into an abyss of crime, corruption and economic ruin during the tumultuous decade of the 1990s, often referred to as the ‘Jungle Raj’ years. How did a land, once the cradle of civilisation, devolve into a byword for the worst of India as described by The Economist in 2004?

Circles of Freedom : Friendship, Love and Loyalty in The Indian National Struggle

The Indian national movement was never a monolith.Millions participated in it; there were many important streams and personalities that shaped it. Most accounts are dominated by Gandhi, Nehru, Patel and Ambedkar, and a standard set of events – the Government of India acts, the Round Tables and the mass agitations. But what becomes invisible in these retellings are actual people whose lives were indelibly changed by this great struggle and who left their stamp on it in their own ways. This brilliant book, by the critically acclaimed historian T.C.A. Raghavan, is an ambitious attempt to tell the story of the freedom movement through five such characters.

At the centre is Asaf Ali, who figured in several of the movement’s seminal moments and whose perspective exemplifies many of the core ideas of the struggle that we still contend with today. Asaf ’s story illustrates the predicament of the moderate Muslim in the national movement – viewed with suspicion by many in the Congress and as a renegade by many in his own community. His controversial marriage to the firebrand Aruna Asaf Ali brought to the fore not only questions about Hindu–Muslim relationships but also the discussion on whether the path to change should be constitutional or revolutionary.

Sarojini Naidu was pre-eminent in this circle, her vibrant personality, her passionate championing of Hindu–Muslim unity made her one of the earliest standard-bearers of the national movement. Syud Hossain and Syed Mahmud – the journalist and the politician – complete the circle. Through the eyes of Asaf and his friends we get a different perspective of events, not a ringside view but a view just beyond the ring. Written with empathy and deep insight, this is sure to become a classic.

At fifty-three, Gita Balakrishnan—an architect by profession—set out to discover India on foot. Her main aim for going on this journey was to explore design sensibilities intrinsic to the fabric of Indian society and initiate a dialogue on design literacy.

1700 in 70 documents her inspiring story of determination, resilience, physical endurance and spiritual growth against the backdrop of India’s diverse landscapes, cultures and architectural heritage.

While traversing 1,700 km in 70 days, from Kolkata to Delhi through cities, towns and rural heartlands, Gita highlights the crucial role of design in every facet of our lives. She engages with local communities, immerses herself in their cultures and finds inspiration from their use of traditional construction practices. In this inspiring book, she delves into the power of design—from creating dwellings and shaping lifestyles to building communities and forging identities.
