Located 2 km from Nilambur town in the Malappuram district is the oldest teak plantation in the world. Formed in the 1840s, it is spread across a huge area of 2.31 hectares. It was named after its creator, H.V. Conolly, the collector of the Malabar district at the time. Chanthu Menon, who played a major role in developing this plantation, is buried here as well. He organised the hectic task of planting the saplings.

The oldest teak tree in the world, Kannimari, is located here. The tribals of the area consider it sacred and people regularly flock to this place to look at this natural wonder. It is among the gems of the State’s plantations. At a distance of 4 km from the town lies the world’s first Teak Museum. The museum is a sub-centre of the Kerala Forest Research Institute. The ground floor is dedicated to the study of the Kannimara Teak. This species is the oldest naturally growing variant in the country.

The Tirur Vettila is a betel leaf which is obtained from the trees in the Tirur and surrounding areas of Malappuram district, Kerala.

The Tirur Vettila tree is renowned for its unique for its high content of total chlorophyll and protein in the fresh leaves of the plant.

The leaf also has several medicinal properties as it contains the chemical Eugenol which is the major ingredient and essential oil which contributes to the pungency in the Betel leaves.

The Tirur Vettila has a longer shelf period when compared to other betel leaves.

Over 60% of the harvested Tirur Vettila leaves (the total area under cultivation is 266 acres) are transported to pharma markets in Delhi, Mumbai, Jaypore and Itarsi by rail and also to other markets in foreign countries.

Edayur chilly.

Edayur chilly is grown in Malappuram district’s Valanohery and Angadippuram Block Panchayats. Valanchery block has cultivation in seven grama panchayats: Edayur, Kuttippuram, Marakkara, Athavanadu, Kalpakancheri, Irumbiliyam, and Valanchery; Angadippuram block has cultivation in Moorkanad and Kuruva Grama panchayats with an approximate area of 26 hectares.

The state recently designated Edayur Chilli and Kuttiattoor Mango as Geographical Indications. Edayur chilli is a Malappuram district panchayat cultivar found in the panchayats of Edayur, Athavanad, Marakkara, Irimbiliyam, Kalpakanchery, and Valanchery in Valanchery block, and Moorkanad and Kuruva in Angadippuram block. It has been grown in the area for at least 150 years.
