Is your MDF clock base bending or warping after applying gesso? 🪵👇
It’s one of the most frustrating things to deal with when prepping your resin art base, but it almost always comes down to moisture tension and drying conditions.
Here are the 5 mistakes you might be making:
1️⃣ Only coating the front: Gesso contains water. Painting just one side causes uneven moisture absorption, pulling the edges upward as it dries. Always seal the back too!
2️⃣ Using thin MDF boards: Thin bases can’t support the weight and pull of curing resin. Stick to an 8mm–12mm thick MDF base.
3️⃣ Applying gesso too thick: Heavy coats trap moisture inside the wood fibers. Apply 2–3 light, even coats instead.
4️⃣ Rushing the dry time: Even if it feels dry on top, give the gesso at least 12 to 24 hours to fully cure before your resin pour.
5️⃣ Uneven drying setup: Avoid drying near direct sunlight or AC vents, which makes one side dry too quickly and warp.
