The process of creating crystals from zirconium metal requires a lot of heat. In fact, there is no crucible or container that is able to withstand the temperatures not even Platinum. And that’s the reason why cubic zirconia wasn’t mass produced for the jewelry industry until the late ‘70s.
Then the microwave made it possible. In a delightfully cheering-sounding process called “skull melt,” the material itself makes its own crucible when microwaved. Since microwave ovens heat from the inside out, the outside of the material can stay cool while the interior gets incredibly hot.
