Did you know: our ear wax protects our ears from infection, has antibacterial properties, traps dust in the ear canal preventing it from reaching the more delicate eardrum. Simply put - ear wax doesn't need cleaning. It is the cleaner!

Yet, there are times when you absolutely need that ear bud and if you can't find one, you're ready to put just about anything that'll go into that little canal... Phew! We get that.. we do! 😅

Plastic earbuds, like plastic straws, are one of the most commonly used household products and also one of the biggest ocean pollutants. It's size makes collection and segregation and hence recyling almost impossible.

Bamboo ear buds offer a great alternative! These are also used for makeup.

Bamboo, a grass variety, abundantly grown in India's North East states, with a capacity to grow upto 36 inches in a span of 24 hours, is becoming the preferred raw material for many sustainable lifestyle products. Will this also become a case of indiscriminate use of raw material? Only time will tell. For now - bamboo earbuds for those times of need!

Dropping our first post.

For beginners, it's the month when evangelists, content creators, brands, practitioners from the sustainable living community create noise - together, across the world - to inspire mindful consumption, mostly around single use plastic.

Team Maati will be joining in with a series where we scan through our products inventory for the easiest of switches. Easy. Convenient. Sasta. Tikau. Just the way you'd like it :)

Presenting Switch 1: Natural sponges from tree dried sponge gourds (torai or beerakaya), traditionally used as bath sponge for gentle exfoliation. It could double up as natural scrub pads for scrubbing utensils & surfaces, replacing plastic based non biodegradable scrubs.

Introducing: The Good Chai.

And like every handcrafted product at Maati, this one too has its story.

It started sometime last year when our world had come to a screeching halt. Internet was abuzz with a plethora of tips & to-dos to fight corona.

"Village medicine woman" as my husband jokingly refers to me as, turned to her jadi bootis. And of the many things that came out of her "lab" was this tea powder.

The kadhas / kashayams that require people to hold your breath & gulp it down has never worked at our home. So while I prioritised health, I paid special attention to taste. I wanted us to enjoy it, relish the unique flavours of each of its herbs, even dunk your cookies in it like you would with your regular doodh chai.

Over the months, different herbs got thrown into the mix, one after the other, till it graduated to its current form with some 15 herbs that play pivotal roles in Ayurvedic medication.

All this while, I have been distributing it among Covid affected families. And the feedback received encouraged me to turn it into a product.
