A constant presence in every list of India’s most famous handicrafts, the Kondapalli toys have long served as a gold standard for beauty in the southern states. For 400 years, artisans in the Kondapalli village in Andhra Pradesh, have been making gleefully magical wooden toys. The artisans who work on crafting these wooden toys are called the Arya Kshatriyas, which apparently has got a mention in the Brahmanda Purana.
The Kondapalli toys are crafted from a locally manufactured wood known as Tella Puniki, which can be found in the nearby Kondapalli Hills. Tella Poniki is mostly preferred for making these toys because its light weighted and can be carved easily. Kondapalli soldiers, pen stand, Dasavatar set and the Ambari elephants are among the famous items produced by the Craftsmen here. The small wonders, made of white Puniki and painted with natural colors like vegetable dyes, are a collector's delight.
