🎥 | Tension prevailed at Khwairamband Ima Keithel in Imphal, on Sunday after police fired tear gas to disperse protesters who attempted to take out a rally demanding justice for six Naga civilians killed in the ongoing conflict in Manipur, besides seeking accountability for people killed or missing during the violence.
The demonstration was jointly organised by women vendors of Khwairamband Ima Market, the Joint Tribe Council of Coordination Committee Imphal Area and the Save Indigenous People of Manipur.
Women from various Naga tribes also participated in the protest.
The protesters sought to march from the market area, but security personnel stopped them after they had proceeded a short distance. A section of the demonstrators then changed direction and moved towards the Nagamapal route, prompting security forces to fire several rounds of tear gas to disperse them.
The protest came as the ongoing session of the Manipur Legislative Assembly approached its conclusion. The demonstrators urged the government to take decisive action on issues arising from the prolonged conflict before the session ends on Monday.
Among their key demands was justice for indigenous Meitei and Naga people killed or reported missing during the conflict. They also demanded a concrete decision on implementing the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Manipur before the Census and called for the abrogation of the Suspension of Operations (SoO)
