When surface plants take over, light can't reach the lower aquascape layers! Here is how to refresh a heavily overgrown tank:

🪣 Water Change: Siphon out water to make trimming easy.

✂️ Pruning: Cut back overgrown surface plants using long aquascaping scissors.

🌿 Thinning: Trim heavy lily pads (like Taiwan Lily) so light penetrates deeper.

🧽 Detailing: Scrub glass algae with a toothbrush tool and refill with fresh water!

Now light reaches the bottom plants again and the whole scape pops! ✨

How to grow lush Christmas Moss WITHOUT CO2 or fertilizers! 🎄🌿

Christmas Moss (Vesicularia montagnei) is easily one of the best aquatic plants for shrimp tanks, but many aquascapers struggle to get that thick, triangular growth! Here are the core care essentials:

💡 Light: Moderate lighting works best (around 6 hours daily).

🫧 CO2 & Fertz: Completely optional! Fish waste provides enough natural nutrients.

🪵 Attachment: Attach to rocks or driftwood using thread or aquarium-safe super glue.

🌡️ Water Parameters: 22°C–26°C (71°F–78°F) in soft to moderately hard water.

Don’t pay $55 for driftwood! Make your own moss tree 💸🌿

Pre-made aquascaping hardscape tree models can be super expensive, but building your own custom moss tree at home costs almost nothing! ⚡

Here is how to craft your own custom wood tree:

🪵 Wood: Sanded Manzanita branches.

🪨 Base: Okho (Dragon) Stone to weigh down the wood and prevent floating.

🧵 Attachment: Clear fishing line to wrap and secure the wood to the stone base.

🌿 Foliage: Weeping Moss wrapped around the branches for an overgrown, natural look.

After a quick rinse to clear loose bits, it's ready for the tank! The emergent branch reaching toward the light adds an incredible dynamic element to the scape. ✨
