With immense pride, I announce the launch of the 1st CCWA Handmade Jewellery Artisan Awards 2026, an initiative by the Crafts Council of Weavers & Artisans (CCWA) — by the artisans, for the artisans.

Born from within the artisan community, CCWA has always believed that true recognition must come from those who live the craft every day. These awards are a step towards honouring not just the final jewellery piece, but the entire ecosystem of skilled hands behind it.

From Ghadiya artisans shaping the framework, to Jadiya stone setters, Meenakari artists, engravers, kundan makers, chitai artisans, and gemstone carvers — every role, every hand, every lineage matters.

This year, we are proud to present 18 thoughtfully curated categories that reflect the full spectrum of handmade jewellery craftsmanship — including innovation, sustainability, revival, and lifetime achievement.

This morning unfolded like a blessing wrapped in sunlight. Under the golden glow of a beautiful dawn, I was honoured with the rare privilege of meeting His Highness Padmanabh Singh of Jaipur, the revered Maharaja of Jaipur. His presence carried the dignity of heritage and the warmth of grace, making the moment truly unforgettable. It felt as though the Sun itself had risen twice today—once in the sky, and once in the form of our Maharaja. .h.padma .padmanabh.singh

🌟 CCWA Turns 5! A New Decade for Indian Crafts 🌟

The Craft Council of Weavers and Artisans (CCWA) celebrated its 5th anniversary at Jaipur’s historic Rajasthali Emporium.
Chief Guest Ms. Maya Thakur (Chairman- Charan Sparsh Foundation and Director of E-New Bharat /ppp mode Rajasthali Emporium, jaipur) shared plans for a Jaipur Handicraft Zone to take our artisans global.
Brij Ballabh Udaiwal Brij Ballabh Udaiwal & Dr. Deepak Sankit Dr. Deepak Sankit highlighted CCWA’s mission for GI promotion, digitisation & innovation in the next 5 years.
Dr. Rohit Jain guided artisans on IPR, ZED & MSME schemes for practical growth.

CCWA की 5वीं वर्षगांठ पर जयपुर में भव्य आयोजन, शिल्पकारों और विशेषज्ञों ने नवाचार और GI पर दिया जोर

जयपुर, 13 जुलाई 2025।
क्राफ्ट काउंसिल ऑफ वीवर्स एंड आर्टिज़न्स (CCWA) की 5वीं वर्षगांठ एवं वार्षिक आमसभा का आयोजन जयपुर के ऐतिहासिक राजस्थली एम्पोरियम में पारंपरिक गरिमा और शिल्प प्रेरणा के साथ सम्पन्न हुआ। इस आयोजन के मुख्य आयोजक डॉ. दीपक संकित (डायरेक्टर, CCWA एवं अध्यक्ष - कुंदन मीना हस्तशिल्प विकास संस्थान) थे। कार्यक्रम में देशभर से आए बुनकरों, शिल्पकारों, डिज़ाइनरों, नीति विशेषज्ञों और सामाजिक कार्यकर्ताओं ने सहभागिता की।

नया दशक, नया दृष्टिकोण

कार्यक्रम की मुख्य अतिथि चरण स्पर्श फाउंडेशन की अध्यक्ष सुश्री माया ठाकुर ने कहा, “राजस्थली शोरूम शिल्पकारों की रचनात्मकता को बाजार तक पहुंचाने का सशक्त माध्यम है। हमारा फाउंडेशन CCWA के साथ मिलकर जल्द ही ‘जयपुर हैंडीक्राफ्ट ज़ोन’ जैसी पहल के माध्यम से शिल्प क्षेत्र को राष्ट्रीय ही नहीं, अंतरराष्ट्रीय मंच तक पहुंचाने में अहम भूमिका निभाएगा।”

CCWA निदेशक बृज बल्लभ उदयवाल और डॉ. दीपक संकित ने संस्था की पाँच वर्षों की यात्रा को याद करते हुए कहा, “हमने बाल्यकाल की तरह समर्पण से सेवा की है। अब अगले पाँच वर्षों में GI संवर्धन, डिजिटलीकरण और नवाचार को प्राथमिकता दी जाएगी। साथ ही सांगानेरी ब्लॉक प्रिंटिंग ज़ोन जैसे मॉडल विकसित कर शिल्पकारों को सशक्त बनाया जाएगा।”

विशेषज्ञों का मार्गदर्शन: IPR, MSME और GI पर फोकस

ZED और IPR विशेषज्ञ डॉ. रोहित जैन ने ZED प्रमाणन, LEAN मॉडल और IPR योजनाओं पर व्यावहारिक जानकारी दी। MSME LEAN कार्यक्रम के प्रतिनिधि श्री रमेश कुमार ने कहा कि, “उद्यमों को संगठित और कुशल बनाने के लिए LEAN तकनीक अत्यंत उपयोगी है।”

शिल्पगुरुओं और कारीगरों की आवाज

श्री बल्लभ कोठीवाल (बगरू ब्लॉक प्रिंटिंग) ने कहा कि, “आज शिल्प का मूल्यवर्धन हुआ है और समाज इसका महत्व समझने लगा है।”

डॉ. संतोष धनोपिया (सांगानेरी ब्लॉक प्रिंटिंग) ने ‘ब्लॉक प्रिंटिंग ज़ोन’ को भविष्य की आवश्यकता बताते हुए सांगानेर विधायक और मुख्यमंत्री श्री भजनलाल जी का आभार व्यक्त किया।

श्री आवाज़ मोहम्मद (लाख शिल्प) ने GI और IPR से कला को जोड़ने के महत्व पर बल दिया।

शिल्पगुरु श्री गोपाल सैनी (ब्ल्यू पॉटरी) ने कहा कि, “आज हमारी कला का डंका पूरी दुनिया में बज रहा है।”

श्री मोहनलाल शर्मा (तारकशी कला) ने अपनी कला के लिए GI पंजीकरण की मांग रखी।

श्री बाबूलाल मारोठिया (मिनिएचर आर्ट) ने CCWA को राष्ट्रीय स्तर पर विस्तार देने की अपील की।

कच्छ-भुजोड़ी से आए नरेश सीजू ने बताया कि, “CCWA बुनकरों को फैशन शो जैसे मंचों के माध्यम से सीधा बाजार उपलब्ध करा रहा है।”

कला और संस्कृति का उत्सव

समारोह के अंत में पारंपरिक दाल-बाटी-चूरमा भोज ने आयोजन को सांस्कृतिक सौंदर्य और स्वाद से भर दिया।

CCWA की यह वर्षगांठ केवल एक आयोजन न होकर हस्तशिल्प, बुनकर और पारंपरिक ज्ञान के नवाचार एवं संरक्षण का जीवंत उदाहरण बनकर सामने आई।

The 1st CCWA Ram Nirula Awards 2025-26 were presented today in Rajasthali Emporium, Jaipur, by Ms.Maya Thakur, who is the Chairperson E-New Bharat.

The awardees were:

1. Vimla Devi - Kathputli making & performer
2. Garima Saini - Blue Pottery
3. Aditya Jangir - Repousse Art
4. Preeti Kala - Enamel Work on Silver & Gold
5. Kapil Jangid - Sandalwood Carving

And all this evolved in less than 42 hours from a conversation Punam Chopra had with me, on celebrating her handicrafts exporter father's 101st birth anniversary.

Thanks to Deepak Sankit the Founding Director of Crafts Council of Weavers & Artisans , who understood the desire of Punam and family to celebrate young emerging artisans for their excellence in handmade products.

In celebration of the exceptional life and achievements of Ram C. Nirula, and his love of Indian handicrafts , the CCWA Ram Nirula Artisan Awards have been established by his family.

Ram C. Nirula began his career as a hospitality entrepreneur with The Grand Hotel in Rawalpindi.

However, in the wake of the 1947 Partition, he and his wife were forced to leave abruptly.

Undeterred by these challenges, he embarked on several ventures, starting with a dairy farm, managing the Raisina Mess for officers, and later running a provision store at 7 Sunder Nagar Market.

It was here that he discovered his deep passion for the gleaming brassware and vibrant artware displayed in neighboring shops, sparking a fascination that would shape the course of his future.

Inspired by this newfound interest, Mr. Nirula transitioned into the world of traditional Indian handicrafts.

Between 1959 and 1977, his tireless efforts earned him seven National Awards from the Handicrafts Board of India, recognizing his immense contributions to the craft.

His participation in numerous international exhibitions helped showcase Indian artisans' talents globally, and his exports of handicrafts to Europe and the USA brought valuable foreign exchange to India.

Punam & family are giving back to the incepted, designed & made in India handmade sector, hoping to inspire both those who were connected in enterprise to this sector and those young artisans who need to be celebrated for carrying on our hand making traditions with innovation, excellence and persistence.

Hand has its own mind.

Anyone who is a master craftsperson will tell you.

In the Rajasthan village one engaged with over 20 years, I documented more than a dozen artisan castes.

From hand block printers to indigo dyers, lac bangle makers to wool and cotton spinners, weavers to jewellery makers, carpenters to traditional iron workers, thread artisans who made everything from rakhis to nadas to payals, stone carvers to precision costume jewellery casters to potters, basket weavers to many others.

Many have adapted to modern materials like tin and aluminium, making doors and trunks, repairing motors and tractors, becoming skilled tile and construction artisans.

So the skills are continuously evolving according to the times.

There are many artisan skills and products that supply mostly to local products and services, some carry to regional markets, and few to national and global.

Our urban obsession with products that can reach us or we can export, makes us blind to products that are consumed within the villages and small towns.

The terracotta matka till date is preferred as the drinking water cooling instrument, as it uses no electricity and is considered healthier than fridge water.

Carpenters make local bullock and camel carts with collaboration with metal workers, adapting with modern tyres, which usually are old recycled tyres.

And the tools the artisan uses are made by other sets of artisans!

Around 95% of the world's hand woven fabric comes from India, and probably 99% of the world's hand-woven hand-spun fabrics aka Khadi.

Handloom weaving provides direct and indirect employment to more than 43.31 lakh persons engaged on about 23.77 lakh handlooms.

We also have the maximum living hand-skill traditions in the world.

They are not just India's heritage but the world's tangible/intangible heritage .

Nearly 4,000 traditional handicrafts and handloom clusters employ more than 70 lakh artisans across India, especially from rural and remote areas.

However, unofficial sources place the figure at an astounding 20 crore.

Indian work has always been hybrid.

From home or farm or workshop or part time aka gig.

All my life great artisans have inspired me with the deep understanding they have of materials and skill.

The wisdom that comes with using your hands, mind, heart and imagination together is something so real and foundational, along with poetry and lightness.

With artisans I have had my best conversations as a man to man, exploring doing, being and life flow.

They are teachers as well as students, they also have a discipline which comes from a certain training since childhood.

Our modern education systems make all of us theoretical creatures with no connection either to the soul or to the hand.

Thanks to the artisan traditions of India , I have known another universe of existential possibilities has always been there.
