Shopping can absolutely be joyful, comforting, and a form of self-expression but can become the default response to stress, boredom, or a bad day. Is your self-care routine becoming another reason to consume? Not only is it bad for the environment, in the long term it makes people struggle with financial discipline.
What the price tags on a piece don't show are the raw materials, water, energy, labour, transportation, and eventually, its end-of-life. Around 92 million tonnes of textile waste are generated globally every year, with discarded textiles frequently ending up in landfills or being incinerated, releasing harmful gasses into the atmosphere.
Influencers who promote a culture of overconsumption and impulse spending reinforce the idea that clothes are disposable, exacerbating environmental degradation as discarded things often end up in landfills.
Shopping for new things for occasions was a cultural practice before. As opposed to now, where we can shop at the click of a button and much more often, making the practice less relevant today. Additionally, buying and gifting excessively by virtue, creates waste - a lot of waste.
The “nothing to wear” feeling isn’t always a lack of clothes but reflects wardrobes filled with items that don’t work together, don’t feel like us anymore, or simply aren’t being worn. Clothing production has doubled since 2000 while the length of time garments are used has fallen by 36%. More clothes clearly haven't made us better dressed.
