(The Preparation Period)

Sounds of chatter and glee fill the room as the students of Visual Art assemble under the same roof. The sun goes down, the work never stops.

Growing up in the early 20-s, the "mela" culture was a prevalent and significant part of our childhood. So were adda-s.
Simple joys of life were relished on winter evenings as we dressed in our favourite frocks or shirts and indulged in the festivities. From "নাগরদোলা"-s(Giant wheels) to those bite sized "জিলিপি"( Jeelipi-s) left out in the open, nothing could ever dampen our spirits. At the end of the day, all of us had a balloon or "তাল পাতার সেপাই" (Taal patar shepaai) in one of our fists, as we got back home with sore feet. That's a different kind of happiness.

Several years down the line, the city has changed with time. Huge apartments and shopping complexes have replaced open air spaces. The "adda" culture has seemingly faced a rupture and hence, decline. Long lost are those evenings drenched in the aroma of soil, chattering of friends, sweet "আবদার"(abdaar-s) over a "ভাঁড়" (earthern cups) of "চা"(tea) and "ঝাল- মুড়ি" (jhaal-muri).

অবন মেলা (Aban Mela) is an attempt to revive the long lost "mela" culture that celebrates life, art, learning and the simple pleasures of life by the community of Visual Art students of Rabindra Bharati University. Board a toy train and join us on a ride down the memory lane where the puppets wear crimson and dance to Bangladeshi folk.
