This iconic dish, known for its unique blend of flavors and the mandatory addition of aloo & egg, has a history rooted in the exile of the last king of Awadh, Wajid Ali Shah, to Kolkata's outskirts in 1856.

Recently, a 40-year-old businessman from Kolkata, facing financial and familial challenges, found himself in a dire situation, contemplating jumping from a bridge. However, he had a change of heart, not due to the intervention of family or friends, but thanks to the quick thinking of the Kolkata Police. With their keen understanding that the way to a person's will to live often lies through their stomach, the police took a unique approach to the situation.

This Biryani joint, "BH Biryani," in Nonachandanpukur Bazar, Barakpur, is redefining the notion of affordable biryani in the area. They serve biryani on a clay plate with a banana leaf on top, a first in Barakpur. I was amazed to find that their mutton biryani, with 150 grams of mutton, and the chicken chap, a whole leg piece with 170 grams, are priced at just 70 rupees. It's hard to believe! The prices are incredibly low. I tried it myself, and I suggest you give it a try too.

Mayor promises to free shop gates
Kolkata: Mayor Firhad Hakim on Friday said the entrances to markets need to be kept free of hawker encroachment. Decongesting the entrances to markets and shops is one of the seven demands that the Joint Traders’ Federation (JTF) has submitted in the charter to the mayor on Wednesday when 5,000 shops in the area kept shutters down till 3pm to protest against encroachment by hawkers.

The entrances to markets and shops must be kept free of encroachment to allow easy entry and exit of customers,” Hakim said on Friday. He also acknowledged the other demands, including restricting hawking to a third of the pavement and keeping carriageways free, were justified but refused to commit a timeline by when the KMC and the Town Vending Committee would enforce the rules in the area around New Market.

Nearly a fortnight after the TVC demarcated a third of the pavement for hawkers in the New Market area, including Humayun Place and Lindsay Street, the civic body and police have been unable to push back hawkers who occupy over two-thirds of pavements and up to 70% of the carriageway. The deadline for hawker compliance has already been pushed back twice with hawkers making it clear that they will not move till they are rehabilitated in the same zone.

Police and KMC are also looking at stepping up vigil in other areas of the city to prevent fresh encroachment by hawkers. While civic officials in wards have been asked to keep a lookout, cops at local police stations have also been asked to do so. This follows reports from several parts of the city that hawkers were gobbling up pavements and carriageways, anticipating rehabilitation.
