It radiates a universal spirit, that is the spirit I want to express in my work. My tableware carries signs and symbols of existence. My intention is to create objects that people interact with in their daily lives. Hence, I wanted to find an art form accessible to people. It’s about ‘your’ personal attitude. To me, clay, as a medium, is mystical and philosophical to work with. The treatment focuses on softness, the way in which clay can take up an imprint and be manipulated and transformed into reality. It always denotes continuity of life. A finished object like a CUP is the most fundamental object of civilization, with a basic function. The most important thing is that we renew ancient concepts by redesigning them, the creation is old yet new, reinstating the fact that we live with change. Yet, each piece has its own unique character. It is a philosophy of perfect imperfections." - Aanupamaa G. Jalan

‘The lotus now blooms from Gangotri to Gangasagar.’

Saffron sunrise in Bengal.
Let’s celebrate today .. with a new beginning.

Pottery is shaped by more than clay and hands.

Behind every finished piece lies a journey of thought, experimentation, imperfection, refinement, and purpose.

So much happens before a form is shaped and our pottery becomes yours.

And so much of that journey remains unseen.

Watch this short video to see the unseen at the studio.

𝐀 𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐜 𝐜𝐫𝐚𝐟𝐭.

Presented by Alka Jalan Foundation and the Crafts Council of West Bengal, Artisana: A Conversation on Ceramic Craft brought together meaningful reflections on material, process, and practice.

It was wonderful to see Anupama Jalan and Ambica Beri as part of this conversation, thoughtfully moderated by Oindralla Dutt.

Held at Alka Jalan Foundation, Daga Nikunj, Kolkata, the evening created space for a rich exchange around ceramics, shared through dialogue, perspective, and the many possibilities of clay.

Sharing a few glimpses from the evening, along with the feature published in The Telegraph.

Pottery is never just about clay on the wheel.
Behind every piece lies a journey of thought, trial, patience, imperfection, and purpose.

What you see in the end is only one part of the story.
What goes unseen is where the piece truly begins.

Each piece comes from earth , clay and is transformed by fire, but the final pieces feel light, fluid, and organic—almost like they belong between earth and sky.

It’s not just about shaping clay.
It’s about learning to slow down,
to trust the process,
to accept what comes out of the fire.

And sometimes, to start again.

The kiln is where clay becomes ceramic — and where the maker learns to surrender.
Every opening is a pause.
Sometimes relief. Sometimes a lesson. Always both.

Life made of clay.

A softer light.
New colours.

There’s a shift in the air at the studio garden.
The cold steps back, light lingers longer, and everything begins to soften, including us.

Spring has a way of arriving quietly and somehow changing everything.

Mornings at the studio aren’t rushed.
They’re settled into.

A pause.
A prayer.
Intentions set.
Tools laid out.

Then the day begins.
