Sunitha Krishnan
Padma Shri award winning Human Rights Activist

Sunitha Krishnan’s tryst with social and community work began as early as when she was eight years old- teaching dance to mentally challenged children; by the age of twelve running schools in slums for underprivileged children. Tragedy struck when at the age of fifteen, she was gang r***d by eight men who were spurned by her social work. This incident did not deter Sunitha from working on her objectives and she continued to work with even greater vigour.

In 1996, when s*x workers living in a red light district in Hyderabad were evacuated, thousands of women were left homeless. During this times Krishnan started a transition school called- Prajwala, in a vacated brothel to prevent second generation from being trafficked.

Today, Prajwala extends moral, financial, legal and social support to victims and ensures that perpetrators are brought to justice. It has rescued, rehabilitated over 12,000 survivors of s*x trafficking and the scale of their operations makes them the largest anti-trafficking shelter in the world.

Prajwala has over 200 employees, but Krishnan runs the organization as a full-time volunteer—a decision she took very early in her life. She supports herself by writing books and giving speeches and seminars on trafficking worldwide
She even forayed into film making as a tool for advocacy and her documentaries have won awards and accolades at several international film festivals.

Roshni Misbah
The Hijabi Biker of India

An Arab & Islamic Studies scholar, Roshni always wanted to ride bikes but coming from a family of Islamic scholars, her desire it was met with questions and disapproval which she didn’t fight at the time.

Three years ago when she was preparing for her CAT exams, the monotony of everyday life pushed her to a low point. She remembers that it was leaving her house to give the exam, when it hit her that she really didn’t want to- so she turned around and began a different journey altogether!

All she knew was she wanted to do something she loved so she took admission at Jamia University because it gave her the opportunity to ride a bike to and fro. Her parents were initially hesitant, but this time she kept pushing and convinced them. She had some money saved up from working at a publishing house, she pooled it all in and with her father’s help, bought her very first bike.

Today she is a well known motorcycle enthusiast who rides the fastest super bike in the world- Ninja H2 & is the only girl in India with a rare super-bikes collection. Who says one can’t be tough and feminine at the same time?
