Decoration in polychrome enamel colors and gilt. A profusion of butterflies, fruits, and flowers including peonies, lilies, magnolias, peaches, and roses. Exterior covered with turquoise enamel. Rim gilded.
The dense and colorful pattern is characteristic of a group of nineteenth-century export porcelains, that, because of their customary pale sea green ground, is sometimes referred to as Celadon. The type of decoration is similar with the Rose Medallion and Mandarin patterns, which were made from the early nineteenth century to about 1850, exclusively for export, largely to the Americans, who were the only Westerners actively engaged in a porcelain trade with China at the time.
