SKYLLA (Scylla)

Abalone ring in sterling silver

Skylla (Scylla) the daughter of Phorcys and ceto was a sea-monster who haunted the rocks of a narrow strait opposite the whirlpool of Kharybdis (Charybdis). Ships who sailed too close to her rocks would lose six men to her ravenous, darting heads.

Homer describes Skylla as a creature with twelve dangling feet, six long necks and grisly heads lined with a triple row of sharp teeth. Her voice was likened to the yelping of dogs. This description of Skylla is probably derived from the imagery of words associated with her name--namely, "hermit-crab" (Greek skyllaros), "dog" and "dog-shark" (skylax), and "to rend" (skyllô). In classical art she was depicted as a fish-tailed sea-goddess with a cluster of canine fore-parts surrounding her waist.

According to late classical writers she was once a beautiful nymph loved by the sea-god Glaukos (Glaucus), but her jealous rival, the witch Kirke (Circe), employed magic to transform her into a monster. Older poets, however, envisaged Skylla as simply a monster born into a monstrous family.

THOOSA

Abalone Nose pin in sterling silver

Thoosa the daughter of Phorcys and ceto was the sea-nymph mother of the Kyklops (Cyclops) Polyphemos by the god Poseidon.

Her name was derived from the Greek word thoos "swift" and she may have been a minor goddess of dangerously swift currents.

Thoosa was probably envisaged as a mermaid-like woman with the tail of a serpentine-fish in place of legs. Two of her sisters possessed a similar form--the monstrous mermaid Skylla (Syclla) and the serpent-nymph Ekhidna (Echidna).

Euryale - The Gorgon Sisters

Mother of pearl earrings in sterling silver

In ancient Greece and Rome, Gorgon images were common household decorations; their hideous faces were thought to ward off evil. They often adorned entrances to buildings as a way to protect those inside, and commonly appeared on household items like water jugs. This type of magic—where evil is kept away, usually by an unappealing word or image—is known as apotropaic magic. Although the Gorgons are described as hideous, awful creatures, they also served as protectors against outside forces.

Stheno – The Gorgon Sisters

Mother of pearl earrings in sterling silver.

The Gorgons, three terrifying creatures in Greek mythology , were sisters named Stheno “strength”, Euryale “wide-leaping”, and Medusa “ruler” or “queen”. Daughters of the sea god Phorcys and his sister and wife, Ceto they lived in the west near the setting sun.

According to legend, the Gorgons were ugly monsters with huge wings, sharp fangs and claws, and bodies covered with dragonlike scales. They had horrible grins, staring eyes, and writhing snakes for hair. Their gaze was so terrifying that anyone who looked upon them immediately turned to stone. It was said that blood taken from the right side of one of the Gorgons had the power to revive the dead, while blood taken from the left would instandy kill any living thing. Two of the Gorgons, Stheno and Euryale, were immortal (able to live forever), but Medusa was not.

Pemphredo

Abalone earrings in sterling silver

The Graeae were three sisters of fate who shared one eye and one tooth in Greek mythology. They were born as old women and their names were Deino (dread), Enyo (horror) and Pemphredo herself was the personification of alarm and shock.

The number three is of great symbolical meaning in many myths. The Graeae share certain similarities with the three Norns, known as ‘Shapers of Destiny’ in Norse mythology.
One might also compare the Graeae with the three spinners of Destiny, the Moirai who were also called the Fates in Greek mythology.
The subject of fate is also reflected in Baltic religion where we encounter Laima, the Baltic goddess of fate who together with Dievs, the sky, and Saule, the sun, Laima determines the length and fortune of human life.

The mythical story of the Graeae has changed over the course of time. In their original conception they were merely personifications of kindly and venerable old age, possessing all its benevolent attributes without its natural infirmities.

Enyo

Abalone earrings in sterling silver.

Enyo, one of the graeae sisters, was the personification of horror.

Enyo was also a goddess in Greek mythology, sister and companion of the god of war, Ares, and daughter of Zeus and Hera. She was the goddess of war and destruction; in some cases, she was closely linked to Eris, goddess of strife. The two of them, along with the sons of Ares, Phobos (fear) and Deimos (dread), spread terror during the fall of the city of Troy; the four of them were also depicted on the shield of Achilles.

The Graeae Sisters

Abalone earrings in sterling silver

The Graeae were three sisters in Greek mythology, who shared one eye and one tooth among them.
Their names were Deino , Enyo and Pemphredo. They were the daughters of the sea gods Phorcys and Ceto, and sisters of the Gorgons. They took turns using their eye and their tooth.
They appeared in the myth of Perseus, who was trying to find out where three magical objects were located, in order to kill Medusa. He went to the Graeae's cave, and stole their eye. He then told them he would return it if they told him where the three objects were.

The Graiai were usually depicted as old crones. According to Aeschylus, however, they were Seiren-shaped monsters with the head and arms of old women and the bodies of swans.
