“Aasopalav” a word which is derived from “Polyalthia Longifolia” also known as the “Ashoka” is a lofty evergreen tree. “Polyalthia” is derived from a combination of greek words meaning many cures with reference to medicinal properties of the tree. “Longifolia” in latin refers to the length of its leaves.

This tree is commonly known as the Ashoka tree or the Buddha Tree.

The leaves are used for ornamental decoration during festivals. It has strong religious associations and is a part of cultural traditions. Traditionally the flexible, straight and light weight trunks were used in making of masts for sailing ships.
