NDIAN WOMEN IN DESIGN

dialogues with Sheela venkatraman Lunkad speaks today at WUD's "Indian Women in Design" event!
For 25+ years, Sheela has transformed design from aesthetic to impact - creating ecosystems where craft traditions flourish and communities thrive. Her architecture background combined with passion for craft development has revolutionized how we approach textiles, handicrafts, and eco-sustainable hospitality.
Today she joins fellow visionaries discussing "Breaking Barriers: Women Entrepreneurs Shaping the Future of Design," sharing insights on building self-reliance through design innovation.

Sheela's philosophy remains our compass: "Design is not a privilege but a responsibility. When we create systems where people thrive, we design a more equitable future." Her work bridges tradition with innovation, empowering artisans and reshaping the entrepreneurial landscape. This is the kind of leadership that inspires meaningful change in the design world.

The Future of Tradition: Decoding the Language of Craft
This talk explores the groundbreaking work at the intersection of traditional crafts and emerging technologies being pioneered by DirectCreate. We present a novel framework for understanding traditional crafts not simply as products, but as sophisticated languages with their own vocabularies, grammars, and infinite creative potential.
Vision
Traditional crafts are complex communication systems encoding centuries of cultural knowledge, techniques, and identity. Each craft tradition—from Kharad weaving to Phad painting—represents a unique language capable of expressing an astronomical number of variations through combinations of materials, techniques, motifs, and cultural contexts.
The Culture Code Framework
We introduce a systematic approach to analyzing craft languages through:

Vocabulary: The core tangible and intangible elements that form a craft's lexicon
Grammar: The rules governing design composition, structure, and process
Expression: How crafts convey narrative, meaning, and cultural identity

Digital Translation Challenges
As we work to preserve and revitalize craft traditions, we confront critical questions: How do we digitize cultural knowledge without losing its essence? Can AI truly understand the deep contextual nuances of traditional craft? Our presentation addresses the paradox of digital translation and proposes ethical frameworks for technology integration.
DirectCreate's Innovation Ecosystem
DirectCreate is building a comprehensive digital ecosystem that empowers artisans rather than replacing them. Our work includes:

Digital craft documentation that captures technical and cultural dimensions
AI-enhanced market access connecting artisans to global opportunities
Blockchain solutions for provenance and fair value distribution
Collaborative platforms fostering co-creation between traditions and innovation
Craft-specific AI models developed in partnership with artisan communities

Healing Delhi's Blue Artery: An Ecological Pathway to Yamuna Revitalization
In the heart of India's capital flows a river that once defined the city's identity but now stands as a symbol of urban environmental crisis. The Yamuna River—revered in tradition, integral to Delhi's founding, and critical to its ecological health—has suffered decades of degradation. Yet within this challenge lies an extraordinary opportunity to transform Delhi's relationship with its most vital natural asset through ecological restoration rather than conventional engineering.
