Aligharh is home to the exquisite traditional craft of “Phool Patti”. Although it dates back to the Mughal Period, this delicate appliqué embroidery finds limited mention in the repertoire of Indian embroidery forms. Several thousands of women living in different parts of Aligharh district are estimated to be involved in the work, which has remained the domain of women and young girls. The patti e

mbroiderers in Aligarh are often from economically backward communities and income from the craft provides a means of employment in the security of their home. The fabric is cut by hand into small squares and then deftly folded in to tiny petals, leaves and other geometrical and floral shapes. These are then appliquéd onto the base fabric to create a variety of intricate patterns. Noor Tara is dedicated to the preservation of ‘Phool Patti’ and over the past 13 years has attempted to document the craft by identifying and interviewing, both artisans and patrons, and endeavored to build an archive of traditional patterns and techniques. We make a wide range of garments, accessories and home furnishings and find the inspiration for our designs by re-interpreting these hidden treasures.
