Design Guru, Victor Papenek, in his book, Design for the Real World, describes Design as a 'conscious and intuitive effort to impose meaningful order.' Through my work with children and educators at The Kutumb Foundation and other institutions, I have found drama to be a great vehicle for exploring our conscious and intuitive sides. The experience of taking this learning-through-drama approach into my journey of signage and visual communication design at Visions DIS India Pvt. Ltd. has been extremely gratifying for me. Given the floating-island positioning of the store and curvature of the façade of the K**a Ayurveda store, VDIS engineered many firsts for the brand from a signage & environmental graphics standpoint. This is the first K**a Ayurveda store to have 4 signs on its fascia, the first one to have a visible ceiling-hung stainless steel structural detail, the first one to have fascia-lit letters and the first one to have ceiling-hung double-sided illuminated graphics within the store. Here’s a one-of-its-kind multi-utility safe sanitation and empowerment centre for women and children developed by PVR Nest in association with the Municipal Corporation of Delhi. While designing the signage and experiential graphic scheme for this centre, we tried to unpack the butterfly, which is an integral part of the logo identity, and interpreted it through the lens of resilience and freedom. You will therefore find this butterfly fluttering past throughout the Garima Griha campus at Nariana in south-west New Delhi. To us, freedom also meant being free from the the enforced aesthetic forms and colours (read pink!). This bit is clearly visible in our approach to signage colour palettes, forms and communication.

Garima Griha encourages people to walk-in and tell stories or do read-alouds to children and women. Swing by sometime!

Shalimar Group's first mall in Lucknow's Alambagh area, Shalimar Gateway is quite literally a gateway to Lucknow. The Alambagh bus terminal and metro station are an extension to the mall; and the metro provides a seamless connection to Lucknow airport and railway station. Needless to mention, we did have Lucknow's original gateway, Rumi darwaza in mind while designing the signage scheme for the mall. You'll find it in the logo, in the motif elements that are an integral part of the signage identity, in the painted walls of basements and in the frosted patterns on glazings and doors! The shape and form of the signage finds inspiration from the asymmetric floor plate of the mall beautifully designed by Bentel Associates. Alam Ara (Wajid Ali Shah's first wife and after whom Alambagh gets its name) would have been a happy woman today!

Keeping it clean and simple was the only brief we got from this, quintessentially British brand; and clean and simple has been our engineering mantra ever since we started producing and implementing M&S signage assets across the country, eight years ago! But trust us - the super narrow strokes of the brand logo can turn out to be fairly treacherous for production teams involved in making these signs backlit. So, simple is certainly not easy!

Sitting on the same land parcel that once housed Gurgaon's oldest iconic landmark, 32nd Milestone, Milestone Experion Centre is a commercial tower beautifully designed by SVAneeve as a coming together of class and contemporary architecture. The signage identity that we designed for MEC was greatly inspired by this marriage, both in terms of form and material palette.

For an organisation that anchors the change in the fabric of technology innovation in India, the experiential graphics at its corporate office in Noida needed to be colourful, vibrant and full of impact. To us, Pepperelektrik conceptualised and designed it to perfection, and we weren't half bad when it came to engineering and implementation!

It won't be an exaggeration to call this one a 72 acre oasis on the north-western edge of Lucknow. We love visiting Shalimar Garden Bay; we love driving through its long spine that holds a beautiful clubhouse, 3 bold towers and over 400 royal villas; and we loved designing the signage identity for this beautiful property that is imbued with the warmth of West Asian architecture!

If life is a reflection of what we allow ourselves to see, this WPP sign ensures that you see a range of colours reflect back at you all the time! Designed, engineered and built by VDIS, this sign ​is an attempt to showcase the power of creativity and vibrance that brand WPP stands for. The engineering of the sign is such that as you drive past it on the Gurgaon expressway, the sign shifts colours in the cyan-blue-magenta spectrum and reflects red-gold colours at the same time! This design of ours is a classic example of a sign identity imbued with both brand and architectural elements. The hexagonal facade, which is inspired by the architecture, spreads uninhibitedly, much like the blue ink blot that is intrinsic to Prakriti school's brand and cultural philosophy. The creeper's catching up, and will soon fill the backdrop. We look forward to that!
