Long before the roads, the dam, or the millions of pilgrims who visit every year, these hills echoed with a timeless legend.
It is said that when Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati decided to bless the world in their eternal forms, Shiva manifested here as Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga, while Parvati took the form of Goddess Bhramaramba. Together, they made Srisailam one of the rare places in India where a Jyotirlinga and a Shakti Peetha exist side by side—a sacred union of Shiva and Shakti.
But why is Lord Shiva called Mallikarjuna?
According to legend, after Lord Ganesha was married before his brother Kartikeya, Kartikeya left Mount Kailash in disappointment and came to the forests of Krauncha (present-day Srisailam). Unable to bear the separation, Shiva and Parvati came in search of their son and chose to remain here forever, blessing devotees as Mallikarjuna and Bhramaramba.
The name itself carries meaning:
🌼 Mallika means jasmine, the flower most beloved in Shiva’s worship.
🕉️ Arjuna is another sacred name for Lord Shiva.
Together, Mallikarjuna represents the Lord worshipped with fragrant jasmine blossoms.
And Bhramaramba?
The name comes from the Sanskrit word “Bhramara,” meaning bee. Legend says that the Goddess took the form of countless black bees to destroy the demon Arunasura, who could not be defeated by any human or weapon. After restoring peace, she chose to remain beside Lord Shiva as Bhramaramba Devi, the divine protector of Srisailam.
Walking through these ancient temple corridors, you don’t just witness architecture carved in stone—you feel centuries of devotion. Every pillar has heard countless prayers. Every bell carries the faith of generations. Every step reminds you that some places are not merely visited—they are experienced.
For over a thousand years, kings, saints, poets, and pilgrims have climbed these sacred hills seeking strength, peace, and blessings. Today, that journey continues.
