In 2009, delegates from nearly 100 countries agreed to designate September 18th as World Bamboo Day, highlighting its significance.

India's bamboo-bearing area has decreased. The country's total area covered by bamboo shrank by 1.06 million hectares (or 10,594 square kilometers) between 2019 and 2021, leaving it at 15 million hectares.

One major challenge for bamboo cultivation is the limited availability of planting material. Most economically important bamboo species only produce seeds every 2-3 centuries, and these seeds have a short lifespan. This makes it difficult to propagate bamboo efficiently from seeds.

Despite these challenges, bamboo continues to be an important resource in India.

Additionally, the "BAREILLY CANE & BAMBOO CRAFT" was officially registered - (Geographical Indication TAG) in 2024, recognising the importance of bamboo-based crafts and products.

Every year many states are applying for GITAG ( ).
Here is the India map created by myself with # of GITAG products form each state. Couple of product are shared by multiple states like "Kolhapuri Chappal" Registered under category Handicraft has been granted GITAG against two states (Karnataka & Maharashtra).
By end of July 2024 Indian Govt has given GITAG for around 500+ products with Uttar Pradesh leading with 72 and once leading state Karnataka is at 4th place with only 44.
