Kashmiri embroidery motifs have always been inspired by nature. Nature admiration is deeply rooted in Kashmiri culture and spirituality. The beauty of the region itself, has won it a name as the “paradise on earth” and for centuries it attracted many wanderers, spiritual seekers and travelers to explore the secrets of this land. The spirituality and handicrafts of Kashmir have been to tightly interwoven that there has been a belief that the best Kashmiri embroidery masters are those who also possess spiritual qualities. It is to be reflected in their ability to wholeheartedly focus on the pattern that they are to create and mindfully repeat the sequence of hand movements that it requires. Such a heritage is a great responsibility. At Salik and Nisa we honor this legacy and make sure that our scarves are made in strict accordance with it, with ethical attention to both environment and human. As, indeed, they are one.

Chinar Leaf Hand-Embroidered Sozni Wool Scarf. Lightweight and soft. Carefully composed in our atelier overlooking Panjar Pir peaks surrounding Srinagar. Skillfully embellished by Taslima, our sozni master. While designing this scarf, we wanted to create something elegant with a pastel touch to it. Something that would represent that magical sense of new beginning and appreciation of color that take us over completely during the spring season. Perfect for spring chills and summer nights.

Almond Flower Hand-Embroidered Silk Blend Scarf. April is a month of almond blossoms in Kashmir. Our atelier is located nearby Badaam Bagh, gorgeous almond garden that becomes one of the most popular picnic destinations during this period. This scarf was inspired by this time of the year in Kashmir and the beauty of a blossoming almond trees. Kashmir is known for its superb quality almonds. In Kashmiri culture, almonds represent health and wealth. In Greek mythology almond blossom symbolized eternal love. In Ancient Rome - just like in Kashmir today! - newlyweds were showered with the almond nuts as a fertility charm. This lovely oval nut is so strongly associated with Kashmiri embroidery tradition that the boteh motif (known as paisley in the Western word) is called badaam - almond.

Tribal Hand-Embroidered Arif Wool Scarf. Embroidered with very thin hook and silk thread in a laborious process of creating chain-like pattern. It takes great amount of patience and skill to be able to control the hook, fabric, and thread so that the resulting loops are tiny, densely and evenly distributed throughout the chain-like line. Our master ari embroiderer Sumaya owns all these features and the scarves she makes are characterized by exceptional quality and charm.

We must admit, we love this time of the year. When spring comes and breathes new life into everything around. Including us! This scarf, its design and color combination is to honor this transition. A couple of years ago Arif was asked by our dear friend and customer Mrs Aveline Herbert to design scarf that would capture the spirit of early spring. White background is thus to represent last layers of snow slowly giving way to first flowers... We have since kept similar scarves in our collections.
