On World Elephant Day, we celebrate our wild companions — here in Bandhavgarh, and on the many journeys we make to discover beautiful crafts from artisans across India. 🐘

This exquisite wrought-iron “Ellie” lamp came home with us from the Bastar region of Chhattisgarh. Handmade with the distinctive character of Bastar iron craft, she’s now ready to light up someone’s home. ✨

Elephants are so much more than magnificent animals. They are ecosystem engineers, shaping forests, creating pathways and water access, and dispersing seeds as they move through the landscape. And those wonderfully wise matriarchs? They carry generations of knowledge with them.

We love finding little pieces of India that bring together craft, nature and stories.

Every Handloom has a Story.

Today, we celebrate the artisans whose hands keep India’s tradition alive.



One of the greatest privilege of running Malaya Handicrafts is meeting the artisans whose stories are woven into every piece we bring home.

“If we do it right, this craft will live for centuries. Otherwise, it will disappear tomorrow.”

His words remind us that handloom survives through skill, care and the people who continue to practice it every day.

Creating a single handloom piece takes months of effort. Before it reaches your hands, every hand woven piece has travelled a long journey of dedication and craftsmanship.

A small collection of these Kotpad weaves has reached home to Malaya Handicrafts.

Malaya Handicrafts calls Bandhavgarh home, where the tiger is not just the most famous resident—it’s our greatest muse.

Every monsoon, we travel across India in search of exceptional handcrafted treasures. Along the way, we discover something remarkable: the tiger lives not only in our forests, but also in our art, folklore and traditions. For generations, artisans have drawn inspiration from its grace, strength and spirit, transforming them into timeless works of craft.

Today, we’re delighted to share three such treasures from our recent journey:
• A handcrafted Dokra metal tiger, created using the ancient lost-wax casting technique.
• A beautiful folk art painting, celebrating the enduring bond between people and nature.
• A hand-carved stone sculpture, shaped by traditional craftsmanship.

Each piece carries a story of India’s rich artistic heritage and is now available at Malaya, with online orders available too.

The tiger is more than a magnificent animal—it is the guardian of our forests. Where tigers thrive, forests flourish, rivers flow, and countless forms of life are sustained.

Today, we celebrate the tiger, the artisans who honour it through their craft, and the wild landscapes that inspire them all.

Eighteen years ago, Malaya began as a small space where handcrafted traditions, conversations and the forests of Bandhavgarh came together.

Today, as Malaya enters a new chapter, we’re looking for someone who shares our love for healthy vegetarian food, warm hospitality and meaningful experiences.

Whether you’re a hospitality professional, café entrepreneur or someone dreaming of creating something unique in the heart of a tiger reserve, we’d love to hear from you.
