The more you forgive a narcissist, the more their behavior often escalates. Each act of forgiveness is not seen as compassion — it is seen as permission.
Instead of reflecting on the harm they caused or appreciating the grace you showed, they may interpret your forgiveness as proof that there will be no real consequences for their actions. In their mind, the cycle can simply continue.
Over time, this can lead to the same behavior repeating again and again — the hurt, the apology (if there is one), the forgiveness, and then the pattern repeating itself.
True forgiveness is meant to bring healing, but with a narcissist, it can sometimes be used against you as a signal that your boundaries can be pushed further. That’s why forgiveness should never come at the cost of your self-respect or your peace.
