George Eliot was more than a novelist; she was a seeker of human truth. Born Mary Ann Evans in 1819, she defied the rigid conventions of Victorian society by writing under a male pen name — not for deceit, but so her ideas could be heard without prejudice.

Her novels, including Middlemarch and The Mill on the Floss, reveal a mind obsessed with understanding the motives, hopes, and flaws of others. She showed us that morality isn’t simple, and that people’s choices are shaped as much by circumstance as by conscience.
