Scotland’s light rarely holds still. Danny Wise’s 2026–2027 Haute Couture collection asks whether its shifting colours can be recreated in wool, tweed, velvet and Italian silk.
In Scotland, colour rarely arrives alone. It comes through water, cloud and stone. A grey wall darkens after rain. Grass turns almost black where the ground is wet. The sea changes under a low sky, carrying green for an hour, then steel, then something close to bronze when the sun falls beneath the cloud. On the western coast, foam catches against dark rock. Inland, peat, heather and old masonry hold colours that seem less painted onto the landscape than soaked into it.
These are not the colours of a fashion studio.
They are the beginning of Danny Wise’s Haute Couture collection for 2026–2027.
The collection looks to both Scotland and Ireland. Here, we follow its Scottish landscape: not to ask whether Scotland can inspire clothes, but whether something as unstable as northern light can survive the journey from landscape to fabric.
Danny Wise begins with observation. In the collection notes, he describes the low light over castles and lakes, water moving from one colour to another, taupe and bronze appearing at sunset, sea foam against wet rocks and the cold greens of seaweed.
Anyone travelling through Scotland soon discovers the problem with describing its colours. Grey is not one colour here. Neither is green. Water, vegetation, rock and sky continually alter one another.
The weather is part of the palette.
That matters because Scottish cloth developed in a country where clothing had work to do. Wool insulates. Tweed is dense and durable. Its surface absorbs rather than reflects light. The cloth belongs naturally among rough ground, rain and wind because its physical character shares something with them.

In Danny Wise’s collection, wool receives light while satin throws it back: landscape becomes the garment, and the light begins moving again.
Danny Wise introduces another surface.
Silk.
His collection deliberately places matte wool against lustrous Italian silk. Silk satin appears in shirts, bows, ruffles and pleated details; elsewhere the material vocabulary moves through tweed, bouclé, mohair, velour and chiffon.
The contrast is more interesting than simply dressing Italian couture in Scottish references.
Wool receives light. Satin throws it back.
Suddenly the landscape has acquired a movement.
A wet Scottish rock can appear almost flat until water catches the sky across its surface. The sea can be dark beneath a cloud and silver where the cloud breaks. Wise uses fabric in much the same way. A matte material holds colour quietly; a lustrous one changes as the wearer moves.
The collection’s palette makes the connection explicit. It includes several greys, sea greens, salmon, water-soaked earth browns, bronze, copper, gold and black.
Salmon is particularly revealing.
Wise recalls the colour of wild Scottish salmon and translates it into evening velour. Around it he imagines green and midnight-blue velvet, while orange silk carries the colour of sunset indoors.
The movement is simple.
Outside becomes inside.
Sea becomes velvet. Sunset becomes silk.
Yet the sketches show that the translation is not literal. There are no tartan postcards marching across the page. One drawing gives a long orange skirt a sharply fitted violet jacket and an enormous black hat. Another reduces the body to a pale fitted dress interrupted by small bows.
A trouser look carries scattered gold, blue and red marks beneath a quiet pink top.
Elsewhere, flowers, ruffles and narrow tailoring move between restraint and theatricality.
Scotland has been dismantled before being rebuilt.
That distinction matters. The easiest way to turn a country into fashion is to collect its most recognisable symbols. Tartan. Highland dress. Castles. Heather. Bagpipes. The result may identify Scotland immediately while saying almost nothing about being there.
Landscape works differently.
Stand beside Scottish water late in the day and what matters is not simply the lake or castle before you. It is what the light does to them: arriving through a particular angle, striking water and stone, and changing what the eye believes their colour to be.
That is harder to hold.
This is where Danny Wise’s 2026–2027 Haute Couture collection takes physical form through the relationship between surfaces. Scotland and Ireland provide the changing light, colours and textures that inspired it; they move into wool, tweed, velour and Italian silk. What happened across water, stone and wet earth begins happening across cloth.
The Maison describes the garments as made in Italy, with different ateliers handling different stages of their construction. Its atelier tailleur works on structured jackets and coats; its atelier flou handles silk, chiffon, tulle and organza. A separate finishing atelier makes the ruffles, pleats, bias bindings and fabric-covered buttons by hand.
Scotland provides the light, colour and surfaces; Italian couture gives them shape, movement and lustre. Wool becomes structure. Silk returns movement and reflection. What began outside — sea, stone, wet earth and changing light — is rebuilt around the moving body.
Perhaps that is how a landscape can be worn.
Not by printing a picture of Scotland onto a dress, nor by reducing a country to its familiar symbols, but by noticing what happens there. The bronze that exists for minutes on water. The green trapped beneath a cold sea.
Salmon against silver skin.
Wet brown earth. Wool under a grey sky.
Light disappearing from stone.
A traveller can photograph all of them.
A couturier has to recreate what the light should do next.
