🎃 Happy National Horror Movie Day! 🎬
Every year on October 23, horror fans around the world celebrate the genre that keeps us up at night!

National Horror Movie Day was created by Black Vortex Cinema (in collaboration with National Day Calendar) to celebrate horror films as one of cinema’s most creative and influential genres. The date was chosen in honor of legendary filmmaker Sam Raimi — the mastermind behind The Evil Dead — who was born on October 23.

While some sources trace its origins to 2020, the day was formally launched and promoted in 2023, marking a global celebration of all things scary, suspenseful, and spine-tingling.

Georgios Dikonimos (1887 - 1939)

From Sfakia in Crete, he was a Greek Soldier and Revolutionary who fought in the Macedonian Struggle (1904-08) and the Balkan Wars (1912-13).

At the age of 16 in 1903, he was first recruited to join the Cretan led force of Georgios Tsontos based in western Macedonia, to meet the challenge of the Bulgarians in the region.

It was there in 1903, that the Bulgarians began attacking Greek civilians and institutions, during their failed attempt at a revolt, which was swiftly put down.

Dikonimos returned in 1904 at the outbreak of the Macedonian Struggle, participating in numerous battles against both the Bulgarians and the Turks, making it through the entire 4-year struggle.

He continued on during the Balkan Wars, once again putting his life on the line, so that Macedonia would finally be free once again and re-united with the rest of Greece, which would be achieved by the end of the Balkan Wars.

He dies in Athens in 1939.

November 22nd, 1940 - The Liberation of Korytsa.

During the Greco-Italian War of WW2. Korytsa in Northern Epirus, became the main base of operations for the Italian Air Force, where it launched attacks on Greece.

During the Greek counter-attack, the Italians fled the area, thus bringing the city under the control of the Greek Army, Liberating the Greeks of Korytsa once again.
