A fabric collection starts with choices.

Colours, textures, weights, checks, plains- sometimes the most interesting part of sourcing is having all the possibilities in front of you and finding the right combination for a specific project.

Italian suppliers offer an incredible variety, and even within stock and deadstock collections there is much more choice than people often expect.

This is the part of my work you don’t always see: looking, comparing, touching, selecting- and finding the right fabrics for each client.

Sometimes the difference between “almost right” and “exactly right” is just one shade.

When sourcing fabrics, the obvious choice is not always the best one.

A client may need a simple silk satin- but then come the real questions: which shade, which weight, which quality, which hand feel, and how will the fabric work in the final garment?

This is one of the things I value about working with Italian suppliers: the depth of choice. Sometimes having twenty shades in front of you is exactly what makes it possible to find the one.

Because fabric sourcing isn’t only about finding something beautiful.
It’s about finding what is right for a specific project.

Some fabrics are made to dress the body. Others seem made to tell a story.

Long before fashion became fast, elaborate woven fabrics were a symbol of time, craftsmanship and luxury.

Creating complex patterns on a loom once required extraordinary skill and an enormous amount of manual work. In the early 19th century, Joseph Marie Jacquard’s mechanism transformed this process- and eventually gave its name to what we now call jacquard.

What I still find fascinating about jacquard is that the design is not simply printed onto the surface.

The pattern is woven into the fabric itself.

Flowers, paisleys, geometric motifs, subtle tone-on-tone designs- threads create the image, the texture and even the way the light moves across the surface.

Perhaps that is why jacquards can feel slightly romantic. They carry something from another era, even when the colours and designs are completely contemporary.

These are some of the Italian jacquards currently passing through my hands- each with a very different character.

And this is one of my favourite parts of textile sourcing: finding a fabric that doesn’t just work for a garment, but gives the whole project its personality.

Choosing a beautiful fabric is only the beginning.

When I source fabrics for a client, I look beyond colour and design: composition, price, available quantity, hand feel- and most importantly, what the fabric will actually be used for.

Two fabrics can look almost identical and still behave completely differently.

That’s why fabric sourcing is not simply about finding beautiful textiles. It’s about finding the right fabric for the right project.

Buying deadstock by weight can look very different depending on the lot.

Quantities can start from around 50 kg and go up to several tons, while prices can vary significantly depending on the type and composition of the fabrics included.

There are mono lots, consisting of one type of fabric - for example, lining fabrics or shirting cottons.

And there are mixed lots, where completely different fabrics, compositions, colours and constructions can be combined in the same purchase.

This format can offer a considerable price advantage, especially for fabric stores, wholesalers and businesses able to work with a varied assortment.

But the lowest price per kilo doesn’t necessarily mean the best purchase.
The real value depends on what is actually inside the lot and how well it matches your market.

Not everything you see on a fabric is simply a print.

One of the details I always look at when sourcing is how the surface itself interacts with the design.

Jacquard weaving creates texture directly in the structure of the fabric. Add a print on top, and the result becomes much more dimensional: the pattern changes with the light, the background has its own rhythm, and the fabric looks different as it moves.

This Roberto Capucci fabric is a beautiful example — a deep navy textured base combined with vivid red and green florals.

For a designer, this matters. Two fabrics with a similar print can create completely different garments depending on their weave, weight, surface and movement.

That’s why a photograph is often only the beginning when choosing a fabric.

You need to see it. Touch it. Move it.
