Summer is easy to photograph. September is when the envelope has to work.

A ventilated rainscreen keeps a continuous air cavity behind the cladding, typically 40 to 80 mm, sized to the project. Air moves from base to crown. Moisture does not sit against the insulation. The structural wall is not the weather face.

United Hotel in Yaoundé is a rainscreen in large-format porcelain slabs: concealed mechanical fixing, EPDM at the panel interface, aluminium substructure, a ventilated cavity behind the skin. Cool grey, concrete-look, hardware-free face.

The point is not a pretty render. It is an envelope a hotel can run: weather off the wall, moisture moving in the cavity, panels that can be replaced without stripping the elevation.

Thin panels are bonded to the substructure (direct-to-wall with adhesive, or onto a vertical profile with structural silicone).
