Striking poster for the 1972 Parisian exhibition «60-72. Douze ans d’art contemporain en France», issued by the Ministry of Cultural Affairs and printed Imprimerie Serg in Ivry.

Overall in good condition, ordinary wear. Cm 40 x 60.

The remarkable design was conceived by Roman Cieslewicz (1930-1996), one of the most prominent artists of the post war Polish school of posters. Born in Lwów (modern day Lviv, in Ukraine), he trained in Krakow and Warsaw before moving to Paris where he became art director for Vogue and Elle, worked with advertising agency M.A.F.I.A. and on countless projects in graphics and art, creating magazines like Opus International, Kamikaze and Kitsch (with Roland Topor).

The exhibition, curated by François Mathey and sponsored by president Georges Pompidou, was intended as a great synthesis of the latest tendencies in art, but was heavily contested by artists concerned with the institutions appropriating the avant-garde in a big show while ignoring the needs of the art world.

Here’s a fascinating poster showing a “souvenir” picture of the monumental DIAGONALE POUR UN LIEU AVEC BOIS, CÂBLES ET PEINTURE by Daniel Buren. The artist created this site specific work for the inauguration of Le Magasin - Centre National d’Art Contemporain de Grenoble, where it remained on display from the opening, April 26, to May 25 1986.
Not a perfect example of this poster, which shows some wear and flaws on the borders, but certainly an enjoyable one.
