About 70 minutes by train from Kyoto Station, Horyuji Tokoin Temple in Ayabe City is surrounded by beautiful countryside. Its annual Kazaguruma (Pinwheel) and Wind Chime Festival will be held from July 18 to August 31, 2026 (except August 14 to 16).
Founded more than 1,350 years ago, this historic temple is filled with around 1,400 colorful kazaguruma (pinwheels). Spinning together in the mountain breeze, they create a breathtaking sight. You can also enjoy the gentle sound of more than 1,000 wind chimes and cool off by soaking your feet in ashimizu, a foot bath fed by cold water from a nearby mountain stream. Every corner of the temple is picture perfect, making it a wonderful place to create special summer memories.

Summer evenings are especially pleasant for spending time outdoors. Yabu City in Hyogo Prefecture is one of Japan’s premier stargazing destinations. It was once ranked No. 1 by Japan’s Ministry of the Environment as the place where the stars shine most brilliantly.
The starry sky viewed from Wakasu Highlands is said to be one of the most beautiful in Japan. Stargazing hikes are held on Saturdays from late April to mid-November, as well as during holiday periods in May and August. A lift takes visitors part of the way up, making the hike accessible even for beginners.
Other recommended spots include Hachi Highlands, where you can camp beneath a sky full of stars, and Bekku no Tanada, the terraced rice fields we introduced last month. Kannabe Plateau in neighboring Toyooka City is also an excellent place to enjoy the night sky.

According to a Japanese legend, two stars shining on opposite sides of the Milky Way—Vega and Altair—are lovers who can meet only once a year, on the night of July 7. This story gave rise to Tanabata, a traditional event in which people write wishes and pray to the stars. Why not look up at the summer sky in North Kansai and make a wish of your own?
If you're lucky, you may also spot fireflies in June. Popular firefly-viewing spots include Kannabe Plateau and Hotaru no Sato in Okomeji, Yabu City.

從大阪、京都等關西地區的市中心稍微延伸腳步就能遇見豐富的大自然，這也正是北近畿地區的魅力之一。特別是夏天夜晚更是適合在戶外度過的舒適季節。兵庫縣養父市曾被日本環境省評選為「星星看起來最閃耀的地方」第1名，是日本數一數二的觀星勝地。從若杉高原望出去的星空，美到甚至被譽為日本第一。每年約從4月底至11月中旬的週六，以及5月、8月等連假期間，會舉辦星空健行活動。可以搭乘吊椅爬到中途，健行新手也可以放心參加。其他像是在「鉢高原」，可以一邊露營一邊欣賞滿天星斗；還有上個月介紹過的「別宮梯田」等景點，也都很推薦。另外，位於養父市北邊的豐岡市的「神鍋高原」，同樣也是絕佳的觀星景點。

傳說中，將隔著銀河遙遙相望的兩顆星星（織女星與牛郎星）比作一對男女，而兩人只有在每年7月7日這天的夜晚才能相見一次。在日本就因此演變出在7月7日這天向星星許願的「七夕」習俗。來到北近畿地區時，也別忘了抬頭仰望夏日星空。
另外，如果你運氣夠好，6月還有機會看到棲息於清澈溪流中的螢火蟲喔！像是「神鍋高原」、養父市奧米地的「螢火蟲之里」等地，都是知名的賞螢景點。
※晚上搭大眾運輸難度較高，建議可以以豐岡市區為據點，這裡住宿設施較多，再搭配租車自駕前往景點。

大阪・京都など関西の都市部から少し足を延ばすだけで、豊かな自然に出会えるのが北近畿エリアの魅力のひとつ。とくに夏の夜は外で過ごすのが気持ちいい季節ですね。兵庫県養父市は環境省が認定した「星が最も輝いて見える場所」第1位に選ばれたことがある、日本有数の星空観賞スポットです。若杉（わかす）高原から見る星空は日本一と噂されるほどの美しさ。4月末頃から11月中旬頃までの土曜や5月・8月などの連休期間には星空ハイキングが開催されています。途中までリフトに乗って行けるのでハイキング初心者の方も安心です。ほかに、キャンプしながら満天の星空が見られるハチ高原や、先月ご紹介した「別宮の棚田」などがおすすめです。また、養父市の北に位置する豊岡市の神鍋高原も同じく絶好の星空観賞スポットです。

天の川を挟んで輝く2つの星（ベガとアルタイル）を男女に見たて、2人が年に一度7月7日の夜だけ出会えるという伝説があります。ここから、日本では7月7日に星に願いをかける「七夕」という行事が生まれました。ぜひ北近畿で夏の星空を見上げてみてください。
さらに、運が良ければ、6月は清流に生息するホタルが見られるかもしれません。神鍋高原や、養父市奥米地「ほたるの里」など、ホタルの名所があります。
