Last week, I visited a modern Interior-style butsudan (Buddhist alter) exhibition at the Korinbo Daiwa department store in Kanazawa, and took a look at the butsudan that are sold by Ikeda daibutsudo.
There is a butsudan in my house that my grandparents left us so I’m not planning on purchasing one, but imagining “which one would I choose if I bought one?” is one of the things that I enjoy doing when I visit butsudan exhibitions and stores.
Personally, I prefer the ones that are embellished with gold, called “makie”. However, according to the teachings of traditional tea ceremony (chado), there is no rule that expensive utensils must be used. What is important is the feeling put into the practice, and this goes for the size and embellishments of butsudan too.
Recently, I’ve been using this Suzu ware flower vase.
It is a special vase for me, as I made it myself one summer when I challenged pottery throwing. I took an Ikebana workshop in June at Hoen-ji temple in Kanazawa, and the teacher told me that “The roots of Ikebana started from a custom called ‘Kuge’, which is a flower offering for the deceased”.
After the butsudan exhibition, I visited a flower shop called Flower Spot Imamura to give my thanks to them for preparing and delivering beautiful Kuge flowers to my house. I asked questions about Kuge and the staff there kindly taught me 🥺 I’m still practicing, but I’ll continue to learn about chado and buddhism and apply the lessons to my daily life.
先週香林坊大和での現代家具調仏壇展に行きまして、金沢にある池田大仏堂さんのお仏壇を拝見させていただきました。
うちには祖父母が残してくれたお仏壇があるため購入は考えておりませんが、「もしお仏壇を購入するとしたら、どれにするだろう？」と考えるのが、仏壇展やお仏壇屋さんに伺った際の楽しみの一つです。
個人的には蒔絵が施されている方が好みではあります。しかし、茶の湯の席では亭主は立派なお道具を揃えないといけないということはなく、それと同様に、お仏壇の大きさや装飾の有無よりも、手を合わせるそのお気持ちが大切だと思いました。
最近玄関に飾るお花はこちらの珠洲焼の花器を使っています。こちらの花器はある夏の日、珠洲焼のろくろ体験をさせていただいて作った思い出の花器です。6月に行われた金沢の宝円寺さんでのいけばな体験に参加し、先生から「いけばなは仏様にお花を供える供花(くげ)という習慣がルーツ」と教わりました。
お仏壇展の後、仏様にお供えするための綺麗なお花をたくさん持ってきてくださった、フラワースポットいまむらさんに一言お礼をお伝えしたく、お店にお伺いしました。「供花」についてお聞きしたら丁寧に教えてくださりました🥺 まだまだ勉強中ですが、今後も茶道、仏教について知識を深め、その教えを日日の中に生かそうと思います。

I visited Ikeda daibustudo which is a Buddhist alter (butsudan) store in Yokoyasue-cho shopping street in Kanazawa, and bought some butsudan care supplies last week🛍
The staff there were so nice and showed me butsudan that were on sale and told me how to take care of butsudan✨

For example they said:
・Don’t wipe parts covered with gold with wet towels because the gold leaf is not coated.
・If the gold parts turn black from candle smoke, it indicates that it’s time to ask for butsudan cleaning, a process called Hakuarai.

This time I bought a duster too so I’m going to carefully take care of the butsudan in my house.

The Butsudan is one of the things that my grandparents left us.
When I was a child, I used to see my grandmother doing her morning butsudan ritual.

I exist because my ancestors have passed down their lives. And I continue to exist thanks to the precious blessings of nature that I receive, and the many people who grace me with their presence and help to support my life.
That’s why I’d like to continue to consciously build upon my daily actions and be of help to many others.

先週、金沢の横安江商店街の池田大仏堂さんに伺い、お仏壇のお手入れ用品を購入しました🛍
スタッフの皆様が、販売されているお仏壇を見せて下さったり、お手入れの仕方を丁寧に説明して下さりました✨

例えば
・お仏壇の金箔の上にコーティングはしていないので、ウェットティッシュで拭いてはいけない
・蝋燭の油煙で金箔が黒くなると、箔洗いというお仏壇洗いをお願いする目安

今回ハタキも購入しましたので、優しくお手入れしていこうと思います。

祖父母が残してくれたものの一つのお仏壇。
私は小さい頃、祖母の朝のお勤めの姿を見ていました。

今自分が生きているこの命があることは、ご先祖様達が命をつないできてくれたため。
また、自分が生きるために尊い命をいただいているから、それだけでなく多くの方々によって自分が今生きれている。
ですので、多くの人々にお役に立てるよう日々を積み重ねていきたいと思っております。

I donated my blood the other day.
It was the 10th time for me to donate blood, so I received these Wakasa-nuri chopsticks in commemoration🌟
I usually post traditional crafts/hand-made works from Ishikawa prefecture, but it’s so cool so why not?

I also received this orange handkerchief because my birthday is this month.

This time was just my 10th time, but regular donors seem like they could easily pass their 10th anniversary.

Thankfully my body is healthy so I can keep donating.
I actually haven’t met anyone who has had a blood transfusion, but I’m so glad that I can contribute something towards people in need.

I’ll keep my body healthy and keep donating blood just like regular donors.

私はいつもは石川県の工芸や手づくりの作品を投稿していますが、クールなので why not?

今月は誕生月なのでこちらのオレンジ色のハンカチもいただきました
今回私は10回でしたが、いつも献血をされている方々はきっと10回は軽く超えているように思いました。

お陰様で私は健康な体であるため、献血を続けられています。
実際に輸血を経験された方とお話したことはありませんが、必要な方々のお役に立てていると思うと嬉しいです。

長年献血されている方々のように、健康な体を維持して献血を続けていこうと思います。

I visited Sugibayashi-san’s workshop yesterday, and took a making a metal cutlery rest workshop day 1.

I learned this lesson: “Failure teaches success.”
失敗は成功のもと

In the process, Sugibayashi-san told me, “If you screw up this part, you’ll have to do it all again.”
I got a little nervous, but he also said, “The failure is also a part of the experience.”
I didn’t actually screw up, but it’s totally ok to make a mistake!

Overall, I really enjoyed every process and look forward to day 2!

I had such a special experience the other day when I gave a present to my long-time friend’s baby girl who was born last month!

Kaga Hachiman Okiagari: one of the local toys of Kaga.
It’s been said that if you put this toy in the drawer of a newborn girl, she will never be troubled with what to wear.

I am so grateful that there are traditional crafts that I can express my feelings of Congratulations.
Of course, I'm also grateful for the craftsmen that make them.
Maybe, because I’ve seen how these crafts are made, I feel more grateful for them.
When I look at this picture, I feel like the doll is protecting her.

Also, I’d like to express my gratitude for Hiraoka Yuino-ho, where I experienced making this mizuhiki envelop called Goshuugi bukuro.
This envelop with mizuhiki decoration also helped me convey my feelings of Congratulations to them.

I’m sure she’ll become a wonderful woman✨

先月生まれた長年の友人の女の子の赤ちゃんにプレゼントできた、とても特別な体験でした!

加賀八幡起き上がり:加賀の郷土玩具の一つ
女の子が生まれて箪笥に入れておくと、着る物に困らないと言われています。

おめでたい気持ちを伝える工芸品があることに感謝です。
もちろんそれらを作る職人さんにも感謝です。
おそらく、どうやって作られているか見たことがあるため、よりその気持ちが強いのだと思います。

この写真を見ていたら、起き上がりが彼女を守ってくれているように感じます。

また、ご祝儀袋を作る体験をさせていただいた平岡結納舗さんにも感謝です。
この水引のご祝儀もお祝いの気持ちを伝えてくれました。

きっと彼女は素敵な女性になると思います✨
