Lake Biwa guide report from Yuzo!

A high school angler’s very first fish from Lake Biwa turned out to be a true rokumaru—a bass over 60 cm!

The fish was caught on a 7-inch Anost neko rig with a 2.2 g sinker.

After the recent drop in water level, the eastern shore of Lake Biwa’s North Basin has become very clear-cut. Some areas are producing, while others are not. In the better areas, fresh bass continue to move in, keeping the fishing consistently strong.

Yuzo expects this pattern to continue until the next rainfall changes the conditions.

What an unforgettable first Lake Biwa fish!

Lake Biwa Guide Report

This report comes from Lake Biwa guide Yuzo Ishida.

This fish was caught with a Light Free Rig using a 6g sinker.

The area was deeper than 10 meters, and the lake current was moving very fast.

In this kind of situation, one of the strengths of the Light Free Rig is that the sinker weight can be changed very easily.

By adjusting the weight, Ishida can match the rig to the depth, current speed, wind, and bottom condition.

A 6g sinker is quite heavy for his Light Free Rig style.

But in deep water with strong current, that extra weight can help maintain control and keep the bait in the right zone.

This is a good example of how the Light Free Rig is not just about using a light sinker.

It is about adjusting the balance to match the condition of the lake.

HIDEUP FOOSHA MINI — the new Japanese umbrella rig

Unlike a conventional umbrella rig, the center shaft stays stable while the six outer arms, aluminum wings, and blades rotate around it, creating intense flash, vibration, and an unpredictable baitfish-school action.

The name “FOOSHA” comes from the Japanese word fūsha, meaning “windmill.”

Its ultra-compact, palm-sized design also allows you to fish it fast near the surface—almost like a buzzbait!

A truly unique and versatile umbrella rig from HIDEUP.

Lake Biwa Guide Report

This report comes from Lake Biwa guide Yuzo Ishida.

After the water discharge decreased, some areas of Lake Biwa started to show poor water quality.

Ishida completely avoided those bad-water areas and focused on deeper water.

As a result, he caught two quality Lake Biwa bass in around 10 meters of water.

One was a 50 cm class fish.

The other was a 60 cm class fish.

The key point was the strong lake current.

In this situation, Ishida says it is important to let not only the rig, but also the line sink properly before working the bait.

If the line does not sink enough, the rig may not stay in the right position or move naturally in the current.

The rigs used were:

Down Shot Rig
Neko Rig

This was a simple but very important Lake Biwa adjustment:

Avoid bad water.
Fish deeper.
Let the line sink properly in strong current.

EVERGREEN Otter Crawler technique with Yasunao Hondo.

This report comes from Yasunao Hondo, an EVERGREEN-supported JB Masters pro who guides mainly on Sameura Dam and other reservoirs in Shikoku, Japan.

The Otter Crawler is a large winged topwater crawler designed by Hondo himself.

According to Hondo, its best season begins in June, when bass enter the post-spawn period, and continues until the fish begin spreading out in fall.

Recommended seasons:

March: Pre-spawn
June–November: Post-spawn through fall

Hondo mainly fishes the Otter Crawler close to structure.

Key areas include:

Rock walls
Bridge pilings
Standing timber
Bushes and other cover
Breaklines
Shallow flats
Inlets

The basic retrieve speed is medium.

However, the Otter Crawler can also be used from a dead-slow crawl to a fast retrieve, allowing the angler to adjust its appeal to the mood of the fish.

Its sound is one of the key features.

The wings, jointed body, and rear blade create several different sounds that can switch on big bass.

The concave grooves on the underside also produce complex water displacement and vibration, helping trigger bites around structure.

This is not simply a lure to retrieve as slowly as possible.

Start with a medium-speed retrieve, then adjust the speed according to the cover, water conditions, and the reaction of the bass.

The JACKALL SK-POP GRANDE is one of my favorite Japanese poppers.

In summer, I often used its low-pitched, powerful popping sound to call suspended bass up from deep water and bring them all the way to the surface.

It is also highly effective on Lake Biwa’s South Basin, where many big bass hold around thick Ebi-mo w**d during summer.

However, after a strike, anglers often need to pull the fish away from the heavy w**d with considerable force. Standard treble hooks may not always be strong enough for this style of fishing.

Legendary Lake Biwa guide Naoya Hiramura () therefore asked JACKALL to adjust the internal weight balance of the lure.

This allowed strong ST-36BC #5 treble hooks to be installed on both the front and rear while maintaining the lure’s proper balance and action.

That model became the SK-POP GRANDE Hiramura Custom.

Nearly ten years after its release, anglers still continue to use it today.

A truly proven Japanese popper.

A new addition to the world-famous COIKE series is coming.

Introducing the HIDEUP COIKE FISH GILL L.

This unique design represents a group of juvenile bluegill gathering around and pecking at a bait ball in the center. As you can see in the video, even the slightest movement makes each part quiver independently, creating the appearance of small fish feeding around the ball.

HIDEUP President Hideo Yoshida had envisioned this concept many years ago. However, elastomer molding technology had not yet advanced enough to reproduce the shape he imagined.

Now, after years of waiting and continued development, his original vision has finally become a reality.

The COIKE FISH GILL L will be released in Japan on July 10, 2026.

Another truly original creation joins one of the hottest Japanese lure series in the United States.

Why do we use these flat FedEx boxes? 📦

Hello everyone!

These are today's FedEx shipments to the USA.

Whenever possible, we pack bass fishing tackle in these flat FedEx boxes instead of our own cartons.

Why? Because they're often the cheapest shipping option. Most bass tackle is flat, and these standard boxes usually cost less to ship than oddly shaped packages.

Honestly, they're not easy to pack, and they're probably not the easiest boxes to unpack either!

But if using these boxes helps keep your shipping cost lower, it's worth the extra effort.

(Large products like Coike won't fit, so we use different boxes for those.)
