This carpet has been at the entrance of our Minami-Aoyama store for over 20 years.

After welcoming countless visitors over the years, it has developed this beautiful, velvety sheen.

I remember having it cleaned once, but what I love most is how wonderfully soft and comfortable it feels underfoot. Over time, it has become a carpet I simply couldn’t imagine parting with.

Can a carpet actually grow with you?

There are many things that become harder to part with the longer we use them.

A leather jacket, a favorite pair of jeans, a fountain pen or camera that has become familiar in your hands.

A car, perhaps?
The car here at the store has been with us for 27 years! (laughs)

倉敷生まれの私は、気がつけば子供の頃からデニム（Gパン）を履かされていました。（笑）

ロールアップして履けば、成長期の子供でも何年も履ける。
何年か履いて膝が破ければ、そこにレザーのパッチを当てて、また履かせる。

今思えば、ものを長く大切に使うことが、ごく自然な暮らしの中にありました。

ちなみにデニムは、我が倉敷のBIG JOHNの子供用。
1960年代の話です。

前置きが長くなりました。

そんなわけで、私にとってデニムは、いつの間にか人生になくてはならないものになりました。

丈夫で、心地よく、
使い込むほどに柔らかくなり、
色が褪せても、それがまた味わいになる。

そんな私が理想としてきたカーペットも、
どこかデニムに似ています。

長く使うことで、その人の暮らしに馴染み、
少しずつ、その人だけの一枚に育っていく。

そんなカーペットを目指してきました。

ぜひお店で、その質感を体感してみてください。

Like a well-worn pair of jeans.

Born and raised in Kurashiki, I grew up wearing denim jeans from as far back as I can remember.

They were rolled up at the cuffs so that even a growing child could wear them for years.
And when the knees eventually wore through, they were patched with leather and worn again.

Looking back, taking good care of things and using them for a long time was simply a natural part of everyday life.

Incidentally, those jeans were made for children by BIG JOHN, a denim maker from my hometown of Kurashiki.
This was back in the 1960s.

But enough reminiscing.

Perhaps that is why denim has become something I simply cannot imagine my life without.

Durable and comfortable.
Growing softer with use,
and becoming even more beautiful as the color gently fades with time.

The carpets I have always aspired to create are, in some ways, very much like denim.

The longer they are lived with, the more naturally they become part of one’s home, gradually developing a character that is entirely their own.

That is the kind of carpet I have always wanted to create.

MAMのアンティーク・ラグコレクションを、これから少しずつご紹介していきます。

本日ご紹介するのは、
17世紀「蓮唐草文様」のロングランナー（廊下敷き）です。

明代の美意識を受け継ぎ、極限まで図案化された蓮の文様。
400年近く前のものとは思えないほど、今見ても新鮮な美しさがあります。

唐草文様もまた、おおらかで大胆。
当時の美意識を今に伝えています。

同種の作品は、ロンドンのヴィクトリア＆アルバート博物館（V&A）にも収蔵されています。

実は私も30年ほど前、その作品を見たくてV&Aを訪れたことがあります。
残念ながら、その時は展示されておらず、見ることは叶いませんでした。

世界の美術館にも収蔵される、17世紀の貴重な絨毯。

その実物を、倉敷のMAMでは間近でご覧いただくことができます。

We will be introducing pieces from the MAM antique rug collection, one by one.

Today, we present a 17th-century long runner featuring a lotus and scrolling vine design.

The highly stylized lotus motif, rooted in the aesthetic sensibility of the Ming dynasty, feels remarkably fresh even today, nearly 400 years later.

The scrolling vines, with their generous and bold composition, also reflect the distinctive sense of beauty of the period.

A rug of the same type is held in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) in London.

In fact, about 30 years ago, I visited the V&A hoping to see it in person. Unfortunately, it was not on display at the time, and I never had the chance.

A rare 17th-century rug of a type preserved in one of the world’s great museum collections.

Today, you can experience the original up close at MAM in Kurashiki.

MUNI Archive Museum_kurashiki

MUNI has carried forward the heritage of Eastern aesthetics, bringing it into contemporary life as a living culture.

Culture cannot be passed on simply by preserving it for display.

We believe that it is only when it is used, cherished, and allowed to live on in our daily lives that it can truly be passed from one generation to the next.

MAM is located in Oku-Kurashiki, on the eastern edge of the Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter.

It occupies a 150-year-old traditional storehouse belonging to Hashimaya Gofukuten, a kimono merchant established in 1869, and is designated as an Important Cultural Property of Kurashiki City.

Here, visitors can discover the aesthetic sensibilities embodied in Ming-dynasty carpet art—one of the roots of MUNI—as well as the cultural journey of the East, shaped and enriched along the Silk Road.

Within this historic architecture, we invite you to experience a quieter rhythm of time.
