About the Exhibition

“Traces of the Bar,” a solo exhibition by painter Masashige Furuya, will be held at Nomidokoro AJiRO, an actual neighborhood bar in Kanda-Suda-cho, Tokyo.

Inspired by memories of the yakitori restaurant once run by his grandfather, Furuya has observed the world of bars and drinking establishments since childhood. A bar offers a brief interval between the end of one’s working day and the beginning of the next. Within this fleeting time and intimate space, a wide range of human emotions emerge—not only joy and celebration, but also complaints, tears, loneliness, and relief.
For Furuya, these places reveal moments of quiet happiness hidden within everyday life, as well as the traces left behind by the people who pass through them. For this exhibition, Furuya’s paintings depicting scenes from bars will be presented within Nomidokoro AJiRO itself, allowing the artworks and the atmosphere of the bar to overlap and become part of the same experience. We invite you to enjoy this unique encounter between painting and the bar—a fleeting, intimate moment of happiness within an everyday space. Curated and organized by KITAI KIKAKU
